En el segundo semestre de 2013 se cumplió el primer año de gobierno del presidente Enrique Peña Nieto, tras lo cual es posible identificar un estilo de gobernar que, a decir de los colaboradores de este volumen, dista poco de las prácticas del pri de su antecesor Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988–1994), donde en lo político se distingue una restauración autoritaria, mientras que en lo económico mantiene una continuidad en las políticas de corte neoliberal, con la aprobación de las llamadas reformas estructurales. El decidido impulso del Ejecutivo federal a estas reformas fue otra de las marcas del periodo y para finales del año se habían logrado concretar las realizadas en materia educativa, telecomunicaciones, financiera, hacendaria, político electoral y energética. La primera y la última fueron las que más polémica causaron, por el rechazo en algunos sectores y movilizaciones para tratar de bloquearlas, primero, y revertirlas, después. Ello obligó a la administración de Peña Nieto a recurrir a todos sus recursos para imponerlas, incluido el uso de la fuerza, con lo que pasó la primer prueba de fuego de su administración, pero dejó un ambiente enrarecido en el país que deberá gobernar por otros cinco años. In Our Right to Drugs, Szasz shows how the present drug war started at the beginning of this century, when the US government first assumed the task of protecting people from patent medicines. By the end of World War I the free market in drugs was but a dim memory. Instead of dwelling on the familiar impracticality and unfairness of drug laws, Szasz demonstrates the deleterious effects of prescription laws, which place people under lifelong medical supervision. The result is that most Americans today prefer a coercive and corrupt command drug economy to a free market in drugs.
