Akan keliru jika menganggap Taufik Abdullah, akrab dipanggil Pak Taufik, hanya sebagai pribadi sombong, tinggi hati, atau suka ngenyek pendapat orang lain. Oleh karena itu banyak orang tersinggung atau sakit hati. Dalam suatu ceramah, ada yang mengomentari “ di mana ketajaman analisa Taufik Abdullah?”. Dengan enteng Taufik menanggapai “saya juga heran, ternyata saya tidak sepintar yang saya harapkan” (Eka Budianta). Taufik punya selera humor juga. Sewaktu memasuki rumah makan di Pariaman, seorang gadis pelayan menyambutnya dan mengatakan “rasanya saya pernah melihat Bapak di televisi”. “iya ya?,” jawab Pak Taufik. Beliau lantas melanjutkan “Pada sinetron yang mana tu, ya? Waktu main dengan Dessy Ratna Sari atau Primus, ya?”. “Ndak di sinetron doh Paaak, pado acara mangecek-ngecek je nyeh.” (Tidak di sinetron Pak, tapi acara berbincang-bincang saja,” jawab gadis pelayan tersebut sambal tertawa bersama kawannya (Gusti Asnan). Tidak ada istilah pensiun bagi Pak Taufik. “Pensiun hanyalah soal gaji yang harus diterima ala kadarnya, tetapi bukanlah berarti anjuran agar kreativitas dibiarkan untuk menganggur. Kreativitas tidak mengenal usia!” (Kenedi Nurhan) Masih banyak sisi lagi tentang Pak Taufik dalam buku untuk mensyukuri anugerah Tuhan Yang Maha Pengasih kepadanya di usia ke-85 pada tahun ini. Lahir di Bukittinggi 3 Januari 1936, doktor kedua orang Indonesia, setelah Prof. Sartono Kartodirdjo, sejarawan kesohor ini masih melakukan banyak kegiatan: menulis, membawakan makalah dalam seminar, dan kegiatan lainnya di bidang sejarah dan kebudayaan.

Across the Muslim world, governments and Islamic movements grapple with issues of democratization and civil society. Islam and Democracy explores the Islamic sources (beliefs and institutions) relevant to the current debate over greater political participation and democratization. Esposito and Voll use six case studies--Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Sudan--to look at the diversity of Muslim experiences and experiments. At one end of the spectrum, Iran and Sudan represent two cases of militant, revolutionary Islam establishing political systems. In Pakistan and Malaysia, however, the new movements have been recognized and made part of the political process. Egypt and Algeria reveal the coexistence of both extremist and moderate Islamic activism and demonstrate the complex challenges confronting ruling elites. These case studies prove that despite commonalities, differing national contexts and identities give rise to a multiplicity of agendas and strategies. This broad spectrum of case studies, reflecting the multifaceted relationship of Islam and Democracy, provides important insight into the powerful forces of religious resurgence and democratization which will inevitably impact global politics in the twenty first century.
