A hate so strong it kills... Three unconnected crimes become linked in the most chilling way imaginable. Oliver Stark's second gruesome thriller, 88 Killer, is sure to enthral fans of MJ Arlidge and Angela Marsons. Raves for American Devil: 'Impressive... written with pace and a delicate feel for the darker shadows of the American psyche... Stark is an exceptional new British talent' - Daily Mail Three crimes. The abduction of a teenage girl, heading towards a bus stop. A woman shot, point-blank during a brutal robbery. A young man tortured, his body found wrapped in barbed wire. With nothing to indicate that the three are connected, NYPD detective Tom Harper and psychologist Denise Levene must look beyond the surface to find a killer's true motivation. And they believe that they have found a murderer conditioned to hate and willing to go to any lengths to make his victims suffer. The killer has nothing to lose. Harper and Levene have one chance to catch him. Sometimes hate is just the beginning . . . What readers are saying about 88 Killer: 'A true testament to a fantastic new author - a man that has real talent for this genre and I would highly recommend' 'Once again I was met with well-drawn characters, a brilliant and engaging story and an interesting villain who is not immediately obvious. You may well not be able to put it down once you start!' 'A thrilling, nail-biting climax which, as with American Devil, had me on the edge of my seat and I can say once again, that Oliver Stark is an amazingly clever and thrilling writer'

Killer Fat written by Natalie Boero and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-12 with Social Science categories.

In the past decade, obesity has emerged as a major public health concern in the United States and abroad. At the federal, state, and local level, policy makers have begun drafting a range of policies to fight a war against fat, including body-mass index (BMI) report cards, “snack taxes,” and laws to control how fast food companies market to children. As an epidemic, obesity threatens to weaken the health, economy, and might of the most powerful nation in the world. In Killer Fat, Natalie Boero examines how and why obesity emerged as a major public health concern and national obsession in recent years. Using primary sources and in-depth interviews, Boero enters the world of bariatric surgeries, Weight Watchers, and Overeaters Anonymous to show how common expectations of what bodies are supposed to look like help to determine what sorts of interventions and policies are considered urgent in containing this new kind of disease. Boero argues that obesity, like the traditional epidemics of biological contagion and mass death, now incites panic, a doomsday scenario that must be confronted in a struggle for social stability. The “war” on obesity, she concludes, is a form of social control. Killer Fat ultimately offers an alternate framing of the nation’s obesity problem based on the insights of the “Health at Every Size” movement.

Doctors have at their disposal a number of devious ways to extinguish life—and just as many motives—should they desire. Some do. In Killer Doctors, the dark side of the men in white is revealed. So are the appalling crimes of those trusted healers. • Michael Swango, a.k.a. “Dr. Death,” one of history’s most notorious serial killers who may have killed at least 35 patients. • Charles Friedgood, whose shoddy surgeries and gruesome incompetence led to murder—and exposed the AMA’s “brotherhood of silence.” • The dim Bernard Finch, whose near-farcical plot to kill his wife revealed a murder so insanely ill-conceived and executed that it left jurors dumbfounded, amused, and deadlocked. • Plus even more shocking stories of grave malpractice, morbid bedside manners, and the chilling exploitations of a privileged profession.

After Francesco returns a dish to the kitchen untasted, the chauffeur promptly scarfs it down and drops dead from cyanide poisoning. “A succinct, disturbing report on the prevalence of malpractice in modern medicine. ….An imperative analysis that begs for discussion by industry watchdogs and consumers alike.” —Kirkus Reviews “Brilliant...scholarly. A reading of Killer Care makes an immediate personal investment in our own safer patient-centered care logical and worthwhile. ...Killer Care is strongly advised.” —T. Michael White, M.D., former VP and clinical professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; author, Unsafe to Safe “In Killer Care, James Lieber uncovers systemic failures and lack of safeguards in patient safety. His wake-up call not only informs, but provides specific and actionable recommendations for patients and their families. His analysis also points to system fixes that will make being a patient safer for all of us.” —Barbara Mittleman, M.D.; former director, Program on Private-Public Partnerships, Office of Science Policy, National institutes of Health (2006-2012) Each year in the U.S., a quarter of a million deaths are attributable to medical error. If the number shocks, on some level you already knew it was so. Everyone knows someone—perhaps it was yourself—who has suffered miserable treatment in American hospitals, part of the most elaborate, most extensive and expensive health care system in the world. But it is perhaps the most inefficient. Misdiagnoses, wrong prescriptions, operating on the wrong patient, even operating on the wrong limb (and amputating it): these are the consequences of rampant carelessness, overwork, ignorance, and hospitals trying to get the most out of their caregivers and the most money out of their patients. What are we to do? Killer Care lays out the very real danger each of us faces whenever we enter a hospital. But more than that, it spells out what we can do to mitigate that risk. The book is also the story of the remarkable heroes fighting this plague of medical errors—patients and their families, but also doctors and nurses. Starting about twenty years ago, a number of victims and even some perpetrators of these errors began a social movement that offers us vital protections when we are most vulnerable: they have begun a cultural shift that is transforming every facet of health care.
