'Tis the season to be wary... Christmas is coming and all is far from calm in Pointe Judah, Louisiana. Newcomer Christian DeAngelo--Angel to his friends--is at his wit's end trying to manage Sonny, the hotheaded nineteen-year-old everyone believes is his nephew. In fact, Sonny is the orphaned son of a notorious mob boss, a protected witness...and Angel's responsibility. Angel has been commiserating with Eileen Moggeridge, whose lonely son Aaron has latched on to Sonny and gotten into deeper trouble than ever. But nothing could prepare Angel and Eileen for the boys' latest crisis: as they are horsing around in the swamp one afternoon, a shot rings out. Aaron is hit, but was the bullet meant for Sonny? Suddenly, goodwill toward men is in short supply and Angel doesn't know who's more dangerous: the hoodoo mystic with an eerie hold over the boys, the hit man roaming the bayou or Eileen's volatile ex-husband, Chuck.

At "zero dark thirty" on January 30, 1971, units of the U.S. Fifth Mechanized Division left their firebases along the DMZ heading west along Provincial Route 9. The mission, called Dewey Canyon II, was to reopen the road from Khe Sahn Air Base to the Laotian border, in support of a South Vietnamese invasion of Laos (doomed from the start) to cut off the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Alpha Company of U.S. 61st Infantry performed commendably in keeping Route 9 open, with just one casualty killed by friendly fire. They returned to Firebase Charlie-2 in April, exhausted but hopeful--the Fifth would be leaving Vietnam in July. They patrolled the "western hills" through May as rocket attacks fell each evening. On the 21st, a direct hit on a bunker killed 30 of the 63 men inside--18 were from Alpha Co. This is their story, as told to Specialist Lou Pepi by members of his unit.

Lauren's job as a cold case homicide detective is her life. And life just got complicated. Lauren Riley is an accomplished detective who has always been on the opposite side of the courtroom from slick defense attorney Frank Violanti. But now he's begging to hire her as a private investigator to help clear his client of murder. At first Lauren refuses, wanting nothing to do with the media circus surrounding the case—until she meets the eighteen-year-old suspect. To keep an innocent teen from life in prison, Lauren must unravel the conflicting evidence and changing stories to get at the buried facts. But the more she digs, the more she discovers that nothing is what it first appears to be. As Lauren puts her career and life in danger, doubt lurks on every corner . . . and so does her stalker. Praise: "Recommend this one to anyone who loves courtroom dramas where lawyers tear into witnesses like pit bulls. And to anyone hot for a police procedural where tired cops make mistakes but slowly, relentlessly—and with morbid humor—get the job done. Redmond delivers both in one package...The real attraction here is a keyhole view into a world that turns our expectations upside down—a world where a bullying, quasi-fascist cop can be the only one with a handle on reality. Keep your eyes on Redmond, a retired cop who knows how to write."—Booklist "Redmond, a recently retired Buffalo PD homicide detective, keeps everything moving nicely in this well-constructed crime novel."—Publishers Weekly "An excellent police procedural combined with a psychological thriller."—Kirkus Reviews "A Cold Day in Hell is a fine first novel and Lauren Riley is cool new addition to the world of PI and cop protagonists. A retired detective, Lissa Marie Redmond gives it to the reader without the sugarcoating and lifts the veil off how the system really works...or doesn't."—Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author of What You Break "Ex-cop Lissa Redmond has a sure hand with police procedure, which should be no surprise. The joy of A Cold Day in Hell comes from her equally sure hand with storytelling. This is a welcome new voice on the crime scene."—SJ Rozan, bestselling author of Ghost Hero "Redmond has concocted a well-crafted story with plenty of twists, but more importantly good characterization."—Mystery Scene Magazine

A Roman soldier dies on a Middle Eastern battlefield during the pre-Christian era. Captured, chained and humiliated in the afterlife, he suddenly finds himself being led by a band of demons to the first circle of hell. As he makes the arduous journey downward, Ioannes reflects upon his earthly life and his search for knowledge of the one true God. He wonders why he has been condemned and regrets not sharing his belief in Adonai with his friend and fellow legionnaire, Cælius. After the death of Ioannes, Cælius goes through a conversion of heart. This conversion not only leads to God, but to a change in his military status. He leaves the legion to become a sailor in the Roman Navy. Over the next couple of years, he achieves a small amount of peace as he sails the Mediterranean Sea. During port calls, he discretely visits local Rabbi who teach him about God and the coming Messiah. Unfortunately, some of his shipmates take notice of the changes in him and become suspicious. His new faith is revealed and tested during a storm off the coast of Cyprus, where he gives his life trying to save his shipmates. Cælius too finds himself descending into Hades, but on a very different path than his friend. Ioannes must pass through the gates of hell on foot and face a demonic court where his sins are exposed. Cælius finds himself floating down the River Styx into the underworld. He must evade demonic raiders and underwater monsters but is soon cornered on the banks of the river by an unholy siren. Having arrived in Hell before the Messiah, what do these humble warriors witness after the crucifixion of Jesus? Will their newfound faith lead to their salvation as just pagans? Or are they destined to be separated in Hell forever?
