"Dr. Bill, I know I'm not going to win this battle with cancer. Can you teach me how to die?" What is it about this stage in life that calls us to seek instruction?I have come to discover that the real issue is not the event called death but the ongoing journey prior to death that we call dying. Everyone has their own unique journey with dying. It is in that final stage in a person's life that I have had the privilege of knowing and giving care to my clients. This is a series of true stories, from my files. These are the shared voices of people who would find a new way to hope. A hope that would empower them to embrace the mystery of living meaningfully and purposefully until they died. And the story of one who could not."No, Sam. But I am prepared to work with you so that you will find a hope to live with, until you die."

"Dr. Bill, can you teach me how to die?" What is it about this stage in life that calls us to seek instruction? Can anyone teach someone how to die? In his book, Dr. Stephenson suggests that death is not our greatest fear. In this OVID crisis, it is dying that is our greatest fear. "Will I suffer?" "Will I have to die alone?" "Who can I depend on?" It is in this final stage of living that Dr. Stephenson was privileged to witness and assist hundreds of children, youth and adults. This book is a testimony of those who, knowing they would soon die, chose to be open to seeking a new way to hope. A hope that would help them to embrace the mystery of living with purpose and meaning until they died. "No, Sam, I can't teach you how to die. But together, we can discover a hope that you can hang onto that will give you a richer life until you die."

Most churches today struggle to answer the same-sex relationship debate that is quickly transforming our culture, our kids, and our churches. As a result, Christians struggle to demonstrate love and grace to those with same-sex attraction. That means that more and more people who are looking for truth and a place where they belong are deciding that the church is either indifferent to their struggle or outright hostile to "people like them." There's a better way--the way of hope. With deep understanding born from her own painful experiences, Melissa Fisher shows that somewhere between the extremes of condemning and condoning is compassion. In this book, she aims to equip the church to make a positive difference in the lives of those hurting from relational or sexual brokenness. Perfect for pastors, parents, siblings, and friends of the ten million people in America who identify as LGBTQ, who long to love them well.

You exercise. You eat right. You make good choices—the stairs instead of the elevator. You are pursuing wellness. Is it possible, though, that in your pursuit to achieve wellness you are ignoring the one area of your life that needs the most daily exercise? Just like physical wellness requires commitment, a training regimen, good choices, and constant pursuit, spiritual wellness does too. In A New Way of Living, you'll discover a practical spiritual training program that can be successfully embraced and followed. Using nine simple verses, author, preacher, runner, and cyclist Gene Wilkes paints the picture of how to pursue spiritual wellness. Using carefully interpreted messages from the Beatitudes, you'll have an understanding of the people, the characteristics, and the promises that Jesus addressed. With that understanding, Wilkes then helps you develop your simple Beatitude exercise regimen. Each chapter in A New Way of Living includes reflection questions as part of a takeaway section as well as a small-group discussion guide and three-week devotional for digital online use. The book also contains photos characteristic of metaphors used in the book as well as other ancillary items.

Hope In The Dark written by Rebecca Solnit and has been published by Haymarket Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-14 with Political Science categories.

“[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker

How We Hope written by Adrienne Martin and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-31 with Philosophy categories.

What exactly is hope and how does it influence our decisions? In How We Hope, Adrienne Martin presents a novel account of hope, the motivational resources it presupposes, and its function in our practical lives. She contends that hoping for an outcome means treating certain feelings, plans, and imaginings as justified, and that hope thereby involves sophisticated reflective and conceptual capacities. Martin develops this original perspective on hope--what she calls the "incorporation analysis"--in contrast to the two dominant philosophical conceptions of hope: the orthodox definition, where hoping for an outcome is simply desiring it while thinking it possible, and agent-centered views, where hoping for an outcome is setting oneself to pursue it. In exploring how hope influences our decisions, she establishes that it is not always a positive motivational force and can render us complacent. She also examines the relationship between hope and faith, both religious and secular, and identifies a previously unnoted form of hope: normative or interpersonal hope. When we place normative hope in people, we relate to them as responsible agents and aspire for them to overcome challenges arising from situation or character. Demonstrating that hope merits rigorous philosophical investigation, both in its own right and in virtue of what it reveals about the nature of human emotion and motivation, How We Hope offers an original, sustained look at a largely neglected topic in philosophy.
