Excerpt from A Brief History of the Last Three Pastorates of the First Parish in Dedham, 1860-1888: A Sermon Preached November 11, 1888 The history of this parish during its first seven pastorates, covering a period of two hundred and twenty-two years, has been written with a fulness and ability which, however much might be desired, leave little to be supplied. For the commemoration of the two hundredth anniversary of the gathering of the church, my predecessor, Dr. Lamson, prepared with painstaking care three sermons, in which, and in the notes to which, was told not only the story of this parish but the religious history of the town, to the beginning of his own pastorate in 1818. On the fortieth anniversary of his settlement, Dr. Lamson continued the history in a sermon, supplemented at the time of his resignation, in 1860, by another, in which was told most that is given a later generation to know of his long and fruitful ministry. We have also had prepared an interesting and valuable biographical sketch of Dr. Lamson, which, with other matter, we have printed in a small book entitled, "The First Church in Dedham." These sermons, with this biographical sketch, make together a very complete history of what is of most interest in the religious life of this parish during something more than six generations. It is not my purpose to retell a story which has been told so well, but in taking leave of the period and of its names of blessed memory, we may be allowed to bear testimony to the reverent and loving appreciation in which the name of Dr. Lamson is still held by the generation that knew him in the flesh, and by the later generation that is not without some knowledge of his gifts. "He was a man of most lovable nature; he was our best patristic scholar," is the testimony of one of his intimate and scholarly associates. Excerpt from A History of the First Church and Parish in Dedham: In Three Discourses, Delivered on Occasion of the Completion, November 18, 1838, of the Second Century Since the Gathering of Said Church The first of these Discourses was delivered on the day of the Annual Thanksgiving, Nov.29, 1838, and the other two on the Sunday following. The Church was gathered the 8th of Nov.1638. This, allowing for difference of style (the rule requiring ten days to be added to a date occuring in the seventeenth century, and eleven days to one occuring in the eighteenth, in order to convert Old Style into New, ) gives the 18th of Nov. as the two hundredth anniversary of that event. The state of the writers health did not admit of its commemoration by this Church at that time. The difference, however, is only of a few days. Mr. Dexters Centennial was not delivered till fifteen days after the time. In my own case I should have selected the exact day, it falling this year on Sunday, but that being out of the question for the reason just stated, the best I could do was to make my Discourses the first offering to my people, on resuming my labors among them after some months absence. In regard to my facts I have spared no labor to secure the greatest accuracy. My authorities, when I have not named them, have been, for the most part, the Proprietors and Town Records, and those of the Church and Parish. I have not thought it necessary to encumber my pages with minute references to these Records, more especially as the date of the transaction will, in general, be a sufficient guide to any who may be disposed to consult the originals.
