Beau Sabreur focuses on the adventures of Major Henri De Beaujolais, an officer in the French Foreign legion, known as the "Beau Sabreur", title given to him by his uncle, General de Beaujolais. When Henri and his legionary friends, Raoul de Redon and Dufour do not return in time to leave Algiers they end up in jail. The general sends Henry into the desert to learn the local customs with a mission to conclude the signing of a crucial peace treaty, during which he meets Mary Vanbrugh, an American journalist. A traitor, Becque attacks them… The novel provides a detailed and fairly authentic description of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion, which has led to suggestions that P. C. Wren himself served with the legion. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.

Excerpt from A Beau Sabreur: Maurice De Saxe, Marshal, of France: His Loves, His, Laurels, and His Times; 1696 1750 A Taste for literary exhumations is one of the distinctive features of the literature of the period. Nothing, to judge from the number of biographies and memoirs that are constantly being published, seems to afford the reading public more entertainment than to shake the dust from old parchments and the private correspondence of the famous dead, to sit down, so to speak, on the threshold of a vanished age and peer at the passions, morals, and customs of times that are no more. Thanks to the indefatigable efforts to satisfy the craving for historical and psychological revelations, many new and interesting facts have been unearthed, and not a few personalities, formerly misunderstood or despised, have been placed on pedestals that ignorance or malice had hitherto denied them; while others have, in their turn, been removed from the niches they had long and undeservingly occupied. How many kings and statesmen, cardinals and soldiers, philosophers and adventurers have been resurrected from the vast cemetery of History in which their memory is buried, and paraded for our edification! And what swarms of women are likewise continually flitting past us! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'Beau Sabreur' is a novel by P. C. Wren. It focuses on the adventures of Major Henri de Beaujolais from adolescence to maturity as a well-connected cavalry officer in the French Army: he's an Old Etonian; his mother a Devonshire Cary; his deceased father a Frenchman; his paternal uncle the youngest General in the French Army and married to the sister of the French Minister of State for War. Starting as a one-year volunteer trooper in a hussar regiment, De Beaujolais graduates from the Cavalry School of Saumur to become an officer of Spahis and a member of the French Secret Service.
