When it comes to food, Americans seem to have a pretty great deal. Our grocery stores are overflowing with countless varieties of convenient products. But like most bargains that are too good to be true, the modern food system relies on an illusion. It depends on endless abundance, but the planet has its limits. So too does a healthcare system that must absorb rising rates of diabetes and obesity. So too do the workers who must labor harder and faster for less pay. Through beautifully-told stories from around the world, Kevin Walker reveals the unintended consequences of our myopic focus on quantity over quality. A trip to a Costa Rica plantation shows how the Cavendish banana became the most common fruit in the world and also one of the most vulnerable to disease. Walker’s early career in agribusiness taught him how pressure to sell more and more fertilizer obscured what that growth did to waterways. His family farm illustrates how an unquestioning belief in “free markets” undercut opportunity in his hometown. By the end of the journey, we not only understand how the drive to produce ever more food became hardwired into the American psyche, but why shifting our mindset is essential. It starts, Walker argues, with remembering that what we eat affects the wider world. If each of us decides that bigger isn’t always better, we can renegotiate the grand food bargain, one individual decision at a time.

Is it a good bargain to throw money to the frogs in the pond and then complain about the frogs’ behavior? Is it smart to give a slaughtered cow to the dogs and then expect something in return? Isn’t it a great luck to make the princess laugh and get her hand only cause of this? Well it may be, if the farmer in our story wanted the princess’s hand. Which he apparently doesn’t. What happened after that? Did the king punish the insolent farmer? Is the farmer stupid enough to not accept the better life he gets offered or he is about to make even greater bargain? Children and adults alike, immerse yourselves into Grimm’s world of folktales and legends! Come, discover the little-known tales and treasured classics in this collection of 200 fairytales. A myth-shattering investigation of the true cost of America's passion for finding a better bargain From the shuttered factories of the Rust Belt to the strip malls of the Sun Belt-and almost everywhere in between-America has been transformed by its relentless fixation on low price. This pervasive yet little- examined obsession with bargains is arguably the most powerful and devastating market force of our time, having fueled an excess of consumerism that blights our landscapes, escalates personal debt, lowers our standard of living, and even skews of our concept of time. Spotlighting the peculiar forces that drove Americans away from quality, durability, and craftsmanship and towards quantity, quantity, and more quantity, Ellen Ruppel Shell traces the rise of the bargain through our current big-box profusion to expose the astronomically high cost of cheap.

A Better Bargain written by Martin Manley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-09 with categories.

In A Better Bargain, Martin Manley delivers a compelling case for a modern form of income bargaining to grow America's vital middle class. He describes why investments in education, technology, or trade are unlikely to raise the pay of below-median workers. He argues that higher minimum wages or basic incomes can reduce poverty, but do little for those earning $40-$70,000 per year. Writing as a former union organizer, Assistant US Labor Secretary, and successful technology entrepreneur, Manley challenges conventional wisdom about how best to distribute pay in a modern economy. This well-crafted and provocative narrative describes how employers can organize to strengthen labor markets with unions that are as easy to form, join, or quit as a bowling league. A Better Bargain is a manifesto for renewing the American middle class. It outlines the rules, incentives, and information needed for income bargaining to grow competitive businesses, strengthen civil society, and once again award larger pay raises to those who earn the least.

Getting Back To Full Employment written by Dean Baker and has been published by Center for Economic & Policy Research this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Full employment policies categories.

While most people intuitively know that low unemployment is important to job seekers, they may not realize that high levels of employment actually would make an enormous difference in the lives of large segments of the workforce who already have jobs. Particularly in an era of historically high wage and income inequality, many in the workforce depend on full employment labor markets, and the bargaining power it provides, to secure a fair share of the economy's growth. For the bottom third or even half of the wage distribution, high levels of employment are a necessary condition for improving wages, higher incomes, and better working conditions. This book is a follow-up to a book written a decade ago by the authors, The Benefits of Full Employment (Economic Policy Institute, 2003). It builds on the evidence presented in that book, showing that real wage growth for workers in the bottom half of the income scale is highly dependent on the overall rate of unemployment. In the late 1990s, when the United States saw its first sustained period of low unemployment in more than a quarter century, workers at the middle and bottom of the wage distribution were able to secure substantial gains in real wages. When unemployment rose in the 2001 recession, and again following the collapse of the housing bubble, most workers no longer had the bargaining power to share in the benefits of growth. The book also documents another critical yet often overlooked side effect of full employment: improved fiscal conditions (without mindless budget policies like the current sequestration). Finally, in this volume, unlike the earlier one, the authors present a broad set of policies designed to boost growth and get the unemployment rate down to a level where far more workers have a fighting chance of getting ahead.
