Waardenburg’s magisterial essay traces the rise and development of the academic study of religion from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, outlining the establishment of the discipline, its connections with other fields, religion as a subject of research, and perspectives on a phenomenological study of religion. Futhermore a second part comprises an anthology of texts from 41 scholars whose work was programmatic in the evolution of the academic study of religion. Each chapter presents a particular approach, theory, and method relevant to the study of religion. The pieces selected for this volume were taken from the discipline of religious studies as well as from related fields, such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to name a few.

What is time? How does our sense of time lead us to approach the world? How did the peoples of the past view time? This book answers these questions through an investigation of the cultures of time in Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and the Australian Dreamtime. It argues that our contemporary world is blind as to the significance and complexity of time, preferring to believe that time is natural and unchanging. This is of critical importance to historians since the base matter of their study is time, yet there is almost no theoretical literature on time in history. This book offers the first detailed historiographical study of the centrality of time to human cultures. It sets out the complex ways in which ideas of time developed in the major world religions, and the manner in which such conceptions led people both to live in ways very different to our contemporary world and to make very different kinds of histories. It goes on to argue that modern scientific descriptions of time, such as Einsteins Theory of Relativity, lie much closer to the complex understandings of time in religions such as Christianity than they do to our common-sense notions of time which are centred on progress through a past, present and future.

This book provides a comprehensive selection of readings that relate to and explore the definition of religion. The texts come from a wide range of approaches, unified both by the questions they are addressing and their broadly social scientific perspective. The disciplines covered include anthropology, phenomenology, psychology and sociology. The editors have also included some key texts relating to the feminist approach to and critique of religion. The first section of the book includes some of the foundational texts, such as materials by Marx, Freud, and Durkheim. The remaining sections look at more recent discussions of the issues from the different disciplinary perspectives. Each reading is introduced by a biographical sketch of the author. The book also includes introductory discussions to each section that both raise the key issues developed in a particular discipline and address the disciplinary approaches from a more critical stance. Theories of Religion: A Reader is an invaluable critical resource, accessible to a broad audience as well as students of theology and religious studies.

This book examines a selection of major types of theory explaining religion: religious, philosophical, sociological, socio-economic and psychological. It treats of the presuppositions behind such theories and the grounds of their necessity and validity. It looks at major styles in the definition of religion. It argues that the case for making religion the subject of large scale theorising has not been made and contends that the explanation of religion proceeds better by concentrating on the specifics of religious history and the interconnections between religious ideas.

Descriptive and evaluative annotations of more than 1,000 books and articles in religious education and related fields are featured in this guide. Since religious education draws necessary guidance from other disciplines, pertinent literature is canvassed from theology, philosophy, and history of education; behavioral studies of religion and education; and multidisciplinary treatments. Special care has been taken to include materials that represent the interfaith and international aspects of the field. A bibliographical essay that interprets and evaluates positions and trends is included in each category. A resource for scholars, students, historians, and researchers. Educational theory is explored as it has influenced and provided insights for religious education. The vast literature in the theory and practice of religious education is dealt with in several categories. The section on theory explores basic issues, important positions, and major figures. The section on administration deals with planning, organization, management, and supervision. Program, curriculum, and method are considered together because they so often overlap in the literature. Since religion is a persistent concern in schools and in institutions of higher education, special sections are devoted to the issues involved and the proposals put forward. A final section covers reference works.

At an international symposium in Norway, the 100 years’ anniversary of the academic study of religion was celebrated. This volume contains the papers that were presented at this conference. A major part of the papers deals with the situation of this discipline around the turn of the last century, focussing especially on the work of the Dutch-Norwegian scholar W. Brede Kristensen (1867-1953) and on other founding fathers in the Scandinavian countries. Other contributors discuss methodological questions relating to the idea of a phenomenology of religion. Furthermore, an attempt is made to compare the study of religion at the end of the twentieth century with the situation a hundred years earlier, and to trace some of the lines of development. The book includes a bibliography of publications by W. Brede Kristensen.

A Theory Of Religion written by Rodney Stark and has been published by New York : P. Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Philosophy categories.

This book offers the first modern theory of religion. A deductive theory, beginning with seven axioms about human nature and the world humans inhabit, it derives hundreds of formal propositions about human religious behavior. Included are the origins of religion, the sources of religious commitment, the development of religious institutions, the emergence of religious movements, and the postulation of good and evil gods. Step by step, the authors explain the social processes of recruitment to a group, propagation of a faith, and competition between denominations. They show that secularization is a never-ending process in which particular faiths are discredited while new faiths arise to take their place. Thus, religion is an eternal human response to the conditions of existence, changing in form throughout history but always a vital part of culture and society.
