A continuous expansion of higher education has made it possible not only for more students to get straight into university, but also for more students to obtain a university place at their second attempt immediately after their first attempt fails. However, the educational experiences of students who seek such a second chance have been under-examined. In filling this empirical gap, this book offers an application of Bourdieu’s analysis of class reproduction through education (together with his three concepts of habitus, cultural capital, and field, and the concept of emotional capital derived from an extension of his framework) to make sense of educational experiences of 64 community-college students who seek such a second chance in Hong Kong. The option of community college as a second chance became available in Hong Kong in the year 2000. The book explores how specific characteristics of community college in Hong Kong impact on the ways in which respondents of the middle and working classes see and feel about their selves throughout the course of pursuing this second chance. It also revisits Bourdieu’s framework and suggests the possibility of theorising an observed class contrast in orientation to making sense of (academic) challenges posed in educational contexts as a form of classed habitus of middle-class situational interpretation as opposed to working-class direct understanding.

Abstract: Studies on education evolve closely along the debates of social reproduction and students' actual responses in the process of schooling. Structural influences of class, gender, race or ethnicity are often highlighted and resulted in more or less coherent and consistent student subcultures and typologies. The aim of this study is to capture and explain the neglected complexities and dynamics of schooling by studying a group of ordinary students in a community college in Hong Kong. Ordinary students are under-studied because of their assumed normality and uninteresting experience. By stepping into their world of everyday schooling using an ethnographic approach, it is found that their hopes in life are ordinary but their lives extraordinary with selectivity, inconsistency and transiency as the defining features. Such features result from the everyday interplay of school routines, connections with people, ethics of conduct, as well as visions in life of these students. These interactions shape a certain narrative of life over time and are deployed as cultural tools in particular situations of schooling. The deployment of cultural tools by ordinary students allows an understanding of culture in action although it is fragmented and incoherent, and the lives of them as a whole are characterised by drifting across states of being, rather than formation of any coherent, linear or cumulative narrative. The study contributes to existing scholarship by offering new empirical observations on how thirty two community college students went through and reflected on their schooling experience over a two year span. The study adds to the ongoing theoretical attempt to grasp the complex interaction among structure, institution and agency in social life by capturing the fluid states of drift in ethics and visions among students amidst the highly structured routines of competitive education. Through these we are able to better understand the lives and cultures of ordinary students in a world where to be ordinary is almost like an impossible dream. This monograph highlights the educational experiences of rural children who are 'left behind' by their migrant worker parents in China, analyzing how this situation impacts on their aspirations and self-identity. This book studies the cultural framework of the connections between homeownership and social stability in Hong Kong. In the post-war period, homeownership became the most preferable housing choice in developed societies, such as Australia, Britain, Japan, Spain, and the United States. In the financialization era, its proliferation aggregated enormous wealth and debt in the housing and mortgage markets, affecting social stability by creating inequality and housing unaffordability. Hong Kong is the most extreme example of this among developed societies – in recent years, the city has made international headlines both for its housing problem and its social instability. By studying the history of homeownership in Hong Kong over a period of four decades, Chung-kin Tsang proposes that homeownership is inseparable from the social imagination of the future, conceptualizing this framework as "hope mechanism". This perspective helps trace the connections between ‘House Buying’ as a hope mechanism – one which is central to subject formation, life goals, and temporal mapping for socially shared life planning – and social stability.
