Excerpt from A Brief Latin Grammar The author of this book feels that there is an impera tive need for such a brief manual of Latin Grammar as the French, and, more particularly, the Germans, have had for years. Such a manual, intended primarily for use in secondary schools, can be made brief by omitting excep tional usages and by reducing the usual array of quotations to a minimum. It can be simplified by stating the leading facts of the language clearly and concisely. The present work, designed to cover the ground mentioned, is largely the outgrowth of practical experience in the class-room. Everywhere the effort has been made to state material points only, and to give these in the simplest and most direct way. The work has been further condensed and simplified by the use of typographical devices in the form of summaries and tables. The examples given are few, and are taken from the classics usually read first by the student. It is assumed that a single example which clearly illustrates the principle stated is worth more to the student than a number of sentences on no one of which his attention is concentrated. The Index of Gram matical References (p. 239) is intended to facilitate the use of this manual in connection with texts referring to the standard Latin Grammars. Excerpt from A Short Latin Grammar: Forming Part of a Popular System of Classical Instruction It is not intended to disparage the Grammar now commonly distinguished by the epithet of Eton. On the contrary, we thankfully acknowledge our obligation to its Original Authors; and only lament that, from particular circumstances in its production, it has not been always of that use, for which it is essentially adapted. A short detail of the history of its gradual assumption of its present form will fully explain its incongruities. It should be premised that this Grammar was originally compiled for the use of St. Paul's School, of which dean colet was the Founder, and william lily the first Master. This original, though now very rare, and scarcely known to exist, except as the foundation of our modern grammars, was a notable production in its day: Cardinal Wolsey recommended it by a Latin Preface, in which a course of Classical Instruction was prescribed to all other Seminaries, and its use was enjoined in every School throughout the whole kingdom. Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance.
