Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. Excerpt from An Outline of Industrial History: With Special Reference to Problems, of the Present Day The object of this little book is to sketch lightly some of the facts and phenomena which lie between school-boy history and the politics of the man. Modern life is so complicated, and the development of the last two hundred years has proceeded so rapidly, that those who have not specialized in history find it difficult to connect what they have learnt in their youth with the problems upon which they are called to express an opinion in manhood's days. The historian, confining himself to documentary evidence and, in general, limiting his view to times so far remote that his interpretations may be free from suspicion of prejudice or party feeling, endeavours to draw a picture of things as they were, without reference to things as they are or may be. It is an inevitable result of his method that he should, as a rule, stop short of the problems which belong to his own age. And it is equally inevitable in periods of rapid social, economic, and political change, that the predominant features of one epoch should fade speedily and be replaced by others, quite different, in the next. Successive movements rise to maturity, and die away, to be followed by events which could hardly have been foreseen a quarter of a century before. Excerpt from Industry in England: Historical Outlines IN 1890 the author published a small book, entitled The Industrial History of England, which met with a some what undeserved success, and has rapidly gone through several large editions. It was described in the first preface as an attempt to relate in a short, concise, and simple form the main outlines of England's economic and industrial history, meant to serve as an introduction to a fuller study of the subject, and as a preliminary sketch which the reader can afterwards, if he wishes, fill in for himself from larger volumes; and it seems to have attained its object of awakening popular interest, to some extent, in a very important branch of national history. But it had all the faults of a brief outline, and contained errors of fact and of expression which no one has regretted more sincerely than the author. It has therefore been my endeavour, in this larger work, to produce a History of Industry of a more satisfactory character, while at the same time retaining the essential features that characterised the earlier effort. As before, I have attempted, as far as possible, in the brief limits of a work like this, to connect economie and ind ustrial questions with social, political, and military movements, since only in some such mutual relation can historical events obtain their full significance. Only' is added as a caution not always superfluous yet of course no one can fail to recognise how fundamental for individuals and for society are the ways in which they provide for themselves their 'revenue or subsistence.' And so the books of this series will range from works which frankly aim at providing the definite knowledge which young men and women will need in commercial occupations to others which set before them the general structure of contemporary economic life and the course of development by which industrial conditions have come to be what they are. And concerning these latter this much must be added. Just about a century ago, Political Economy entered into a phase which, in effect and for the great body of the people, was profoundly pessimistic.
