Giappone, anni trenta: è tempo di attentati e complotti da parte di gruppi estremisti. È ora giudice della Corte di appello di Osaka, ha compiuto trentotto anni, da dieci anni è sposato con la mite Rie, da cui non ha avuto figli, e conduce una vita tranquilla e abitudinaria. Un giorno però, presenziando a un torneo di kendo, fa la conoscenza di Isao Iinuma, per Honda la reincarnazione dell’aristocratico compagno di scuola Kiyoaki Matsugae, la cui morte aveva segnato per lui la fine della giovinezza. Isao è il figlio di Shigeyuki Iinuma, il vecchio precettore di Kiyoaki e ora presidente di un’associazione patriottica della destra. Isao, a soli diciannove anni, è un campione di kendo, un atleta che sprigiona energia e coraggio virili ma anche un ragazzo ancora puro e ingenuo. Nonostante il turbamento e la nostalgia, Honda è felice di aver ritrovato l’amico la cui vita è avvinghiata alla sua come un rampicante all’albero e sente di doversi prendere cura del giovane. Isao però, cresciuto nel rispetto del codice dei samurai, cova il mito dell’intransigenza verso il potere ingiusto e corrotto, che giustifica la rivolta, e insieme il culto della bella morte. Sarà Honda a cercare di salvarlo.
