Over the last few decades, our knowledge of how the human mind and brain works increased dramatically. The field of cognitive science enables us to understand religious traditions, rituals, and visionary experiences in novel ways. This has implications for the study of the New Testament and early Christianity. How people in the ancient Mediterranean world remembered sayings and stories, what they experienced when participating in rituals, how they thought about magic and miracle, and how they felt and reasoned about moral questions--all of that can be now better understood with the help of insights from cognitive science. Istvan Czachesz argues that the field of New Testament Studies witnesses the beginning of a cognitive turn. He surveys relevant developments in the Cognitive Science of Religion and explores the field of cognitive and behavioral sciences in search of opportunities of gaining new insights about biblical materials. Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707) was the greatest figure in the history of German music between Schutz and Bach. His church music is performed today, yet that of his North German contemporaries (such as Matthias Weckmann, Christoph Bernhard, Nicolaus Bruhns, and Johann Meder) has receivedcomparatively little attention. This book, taking its lead from Jerome Roche's illuminating study North Italian Church Music in the Age of Monteverdi (OUP, 1984), presents an overview of the North German church music of Buxtehude's lifetime, much of which remains unavailable in modern editions. Itchallenges widely-held beliefs about the nature and development of the repertory, and of the place held by Buxtehude within it. The picture that emerges is of a repertory that is far more beholden to Italian influence that has previously been appreciated, and one that is not dominated by any singlefigure. After discussion of the religious background and liturgical context in which the music was performed, Geoffrey Webber examines the manner in which Italian church music became known and performed in the region, and surveys composers from all the principal courts and cities in the extensiveNorth German and Baltic area. He highlights the relationship between the social context in which individual composers worked and the nature of their output. After a detailed analysis of the repertory itself, the book concludes with an examination of issues relating to performance practice.

This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace through politically structured religious communities (confessions), thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence into the modern era as a people having two national religions was the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.

This is a detailed and scholarly account of religious belief and conflict in the strategically important province of Inner Austria between 1580 and 1630. Regina Pörtner shows how Protestantization in the first half of the sixteenth century was linked to communication with the Protestants of the rest of the Empire, and to the failure of ecclesiastical reform in the church province of Salzburg, of which Styria formed part. The Protestant success of 1578, however, proved deceptive because it lacked constitutional substance, and was defended by an inherently weak union of the Inner Austrian estates. Dr Pörtner analyses the aims, achievements, and shortcomings of the Habsburgs' confessional crusade in Styria, showing how although the progress of Protestantization was reversed, the Counter-Reformation left an ambivalent legacy to the modern Austrian state.
