John A. Chapman (1780/1790-ca.1842) apparently moved from Shelby County to Coosa County, Alabama between 1830 and 1840. There were four surviving sons: Simeon, Griffith, John and Anderson. Simeon pro- bably inherited his father's property because he stayed in Alabama. Griffith moved to Texas, and later to Chattanooga, Tennessee. This book traces the genealogy of the other two sons, John and Anderson. John Chapman (ca.1798-1860/1870) was born in Tennessee, moved to Alabama (with his parents), and then via Louisiana to Denton County and then Hill County, Texas. Anderson Chapman (1811-1867) was born in Tennesse and moved to Alabama with his parents. In October 1850 he moved to Union Parish, Louisiana, and later moved up to the Red River county, and then to Cooke County, Texas and by 1859 to Denton County, Texas. Descendants and relatives also lived in Arkansas, Georgia, California and elsewhere.

Excerpt from Chapman Family In the summer of 1896, the writer, a granddaughter of the Rev. Benjamin Chapman, accompanied by her son, visited the former homes and haunts of the earlier members or the Chapman family; and from town records, tombstones and conversation with some very old people of the different places visited, most of the materials for this little sketch were gathered. According to family tradition, three brothers named Chapman left Scotland in the mid 1700s to find a better life and better opportunties in America. They arrived in New Jersey in 1750. One of these brothers became the founder of the Chapman family to which John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) belonged. Descendants of the Chapman family later settled in Indiana and Ohio.
