The country itself rose to welcome and help him when, with the great Thane of Fife, Macduff, at his side, and Saxon Siward with his army, he marched home to the north, so that the usurper trembled before him. Macbeth, as we all know, was a man of many superstitions. He might never have murdered Duncan, or entered on his career of blood at all, if it had not been for the witches, women who were feared and believed in those days, and who were said to have put the whole dreadful scheme into his head, or perhaps only fanned the flame which had been al ready smouldering there. He had been told by these mocking prophetesses that he was safe until Bimam Wood should march to Dunsinane, where he was lodged in his strong castle. This he understood to mean that he should be always safe, for it was certain that to Dunsinane, or anywhere else, Bimam Wood could never march. But it happened that, as the advancing army marched through the noble covert of this wood, Macduff advised the soldiers each to cut for himself a bough from the trees, that their number should not be detected, and thus as Siward's men and the loyal Scots approached, the bright ness of their helmets and breastplates veiled with the green leaves, it was indeed as if Birnam Wood were marching upon the usurper's castle. He sallied forth in his despair and died fighting, which, perhaps, was better than he deserved. I saw a great oak the other day upon the banks of the clear and shining Tay which surged round the promontory of greensward upon which it stood, and this, I was told, was the last tree of Bimam Wood. Amid all the wonderful colours of the autumn woods, it alone stood dark against the gleam of the river and the blue of the sky. Domesday Book, curfew bell, Norman dresses, Norman masters and manners, - a child gets no more from Dickens. To be sure, he does not clamour for more. Johnny Lockhart sent a message to his grandfather, he very much dislikes the chapter on Civilisation, and it is his desire that you will never say any more about it, for he dislikes it extremely. Dirks were enough for Master Lockhart. But, if one may speak for oneself (wtat. Sir Walter's exposi tion of the feudal ideal was lucid and highly interesting Here, one thought, was a right notion of how to live; and it is probable that, if children are to be taught history, they can easily be made to see that feudalism was a society with an idea. Dickens makes no effort to reach a child's intelligence on this point. Take, again, the Reformation. What notion does a child get from Dickens about the Re formation - about Luther's ideas On the other hand, Dickens writes here with a fine impartiality, and lets a child understand that the Reformation was dishonest, brutal, and blundering; that Henry VIII., being his own Pope, im partially burned both sides, and was, in a famous phrase. The story unimpaired has been given in Scott's own language. History forms an important part in the plan of "Classics for Children," as outlined in the Introduction to "The Lady of the Lake." It is not proposed, however, to inflict upon the children any selections from the various epitomes now in general use. We remember too well the sixteen hours per week given to "Weber's Outlines of Universal History" as among the most dreary and unsatisfactory of our school-days. The study of such anatomical manuals is about as well calculated to create an interest in historical research, as the study of "Webster's Unabridged Dictionary" to inspire a love for English literature. The time allotted for school work is not adequate to complete the cycle of all the events since the creation; and, were it otherwise, a great majority of them would have little value as educational forces. It is not necessary that we should know every little circumstance happening between he great epochs. Sequence of time has played too important a part in historical works. We have been so busy counting the milestones of each days march, that we have lost sight of the great armies struggling along the way.
