A Child's Home Companion is chock full of wonderful poems for children from ages 6 to 12. Moral Lessons like in the old McGuffey Readers are taught with the idea of telling children how to act and play with traditional values that fit into American culture as it was meant to be including kindness, fair play, respect and belief in the right things. These values coincide with the stories from the Bible, but there are those that are offshoots of nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and other children's stories like those of Hans Christian Anderson, Robert Louis Stevenson and Dr. Seuss. Many of the stories come from my days of being a farm boy while growing up and then arriving in West Texas where the cowboy culture taught if it is not yours, don't take it; if it is not good don't say it; and if it is not right, don't do it. I have concluded that under the modern immorality now being taught, it is time to change our teaching and approach to children, so they may grow up in a balanced culture that teaches respect for the law and police, love and country and patriotism, and belief in God.

From “the funniest writer in America,” a book about cooking and cleaning for people who don’t know how to do those things and aren’t about to learn (The Wall Street Journal). In addition to debunking popular myths about bachelors (they are in fact not creatures known to hang around the house in silk smoking jackets, sipping brandy from oversized snifters), #1 New York Times–bestselling author P. J. O’Rourke offers some useful advice about housekeeping—or how best to avoid it—in this priceless guide. For example: “Every month or so, take the curtains down—and throw them away.” In the inimitable and irreverent style that has made him one of America’s most popular humorists, O’Rourke provides an essential guide to the practical business of living in the modern world and proves that “Camus had it all wrong about the myth of Sisyphus—it’s not symbolic of life, just housekeeping.” “To say that P. J. O’Rourke is funny is like saying that the Rocky Mountains are scenic—accurate but insufficient.” —Chicago Tribune

This book is a one-stop resource for parents and families facing decisions about how to provide their children the best educational experiences before kindergarten. We know that early childhood learning experiences have a dramatic impact on the success and well-being of children, the community, and the country. Children who have positive early childhood experiences develop cognitive and socio-emotional abilities that lead to positive school performance, income, family stability, and health, in turn producing particularly robust educational, social, and economic benefits for your community and our country. This companion offers background on why early childhood education is important in your child’s life. It provides an overview of current research about how young children learn. It suggests questions you may ask potential service providers about a program’s policies and practices. It empowers you to make the critically important decision about the best learning environment for your child. A companion makes a journey more enriching, while providing support and perspective. We hope that this book will be helpful to parents and families as they make vital decisions about the welfare of their children, and their community.

Increasingly, sociologists have turned their attention to the social problems of children– in particular, of younger children. This collection reflects those recent interest. While most researchers have focused on social problems involving adolescents, this volume offers instead original case studies of problems concerning preadolescent children. The papers that Best has gathered here represent different theoretical and methodological approaches. They report on social issues in Albania, Kenya, and Japan as well as in the United States. The range of social problems they address is a wide one, from broad societal crises to decision-making within families. Topics include the effects of economic and social crises in Africa and Eastern Europe; concerns about crack use and other forms of fetal endangerment; parental decisions about spanking, toy choices, and letting children listen to rock music; schooling in day care and elementary and junior high schools; and children's perceptions of environmental crises. Troubling Children adds a new dimension to courses in social problems. It also offers a different set of perspectives for those concerned with sociology of preadolescent children and their discontents.

Millennial Child written by Eugene Schwartz and has been published by SteinerBooks this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Education categories.

Today's children are an endangered species. As a result of the reductionism spawned by Freud and the homogenization of the stages of human life that followed, many children seem to have lost their childhood and been thrust into the confusing and chaotic world of adults. Eugene Schwartz presents an incisive analysis of the ways in which the errors of the first third of our century have come back to haunt us at the century's end. After carefully examining Sigmund Freud's tragic misunderstanding of childhood and tracing its consequences for today's parents and educators, the author points to the radically new paradigm of childhood development offered by Rudolf Steiner and embodied in Waldorf education. Parents, teachers, and child psychologists will find a wealth of insight concerning such diverse subjects as the nature of play, the causes of ADHD, computers as teachers, and the power that love and imagination will have in the education of the Millennial Child.
