Vera Meader is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Columbia University, majoring in Modern European languages. She continued her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, and received additional training in other languages when she joined the intelligent service. During her career she was twice wounded. After resigning from the service she married an Italian cardiologist and raised two daughters in Italy. For almost ten years she was a professor at the University of Naples. Ms. Meader now lives near her native New York City.

In 1952, John T. “Jack” Downey, a twenty-three-year-old CIA officer from Connecticut, was shot down over Manchuria during the Korean War. The pilots died in the crash, but Downey and his partner Richard “Dick” Fecteau were captured by the Chinese.
