The Spotsylvania Campaign was a crucial period in the protracted confrontation between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in spring 1864. Approaching the campaign from a variety of perspectives, the contributors to this volume explore questions regarding high command, tactics and strategy, the impact of continuous fighting on officers and soldiers in both armies, and the ways in which some participants chose to remember and interpret the campaign. They offer insight into the decisions and behavior of Lee and of Federal army leaders, the fullest descriptions to date of the horrific fighting at the "Bloody Angle" on May 12, and a revealing look at how Grant used his memoirs to counter Lost Cause interpretations of his actions at Spotsylvania and elsewhere in the Overland Campaign. The contributors are William A. Blair, Peter S. Carmichael, Gary W. Gallagher, Robert E. L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, William D. Matter, Carol Reardon, and Gordon C. Rhea.

In May 1864 the Union Army of the Potomac under General George Meade had been in a leisurely pursuit of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia for nearly a year after the defeat of the Rebels at Gettysburg. Confederate commander General Robert E. Lee still retained his awe-inspiring reputation for wrecking Union armies that got too close to Richmond and Meade was still cautious. His tactics at Gettysburg were defensive and he was unsure that he was able to take the offensive against Lee. However, things changed when President Abraham Lincoln appointed General Ulysses S. Grant to command all Union armies. Grant came east and laid out a comprehensive strategy for the rest of the war. In the deep South, General William T. Sherman would march out of Tennessee to cut the Confederacy in half by taking Atlanta. Grant would lead the Army of the Potomac across the Rapidan River and march on Richmond. He had the manpower and equipment to accomplish his objective, easily outnumbering Lee. Lee, on the other hand, was far from beaten. The stage was set for one of the defining campaigns of the Civil War in the East.

The focus of the book is a biographical telling of the civil war career of Colonel Tobias B. Kaufman. Colonel Kaufman has rightly been called one of the most illustrious of the civil war heroes of Central Pennsylvania by the well-known Pennsylvania civil war soldier and author J. Howard Wert. Kaufman rose from a private to a colonel during the war. Kaufman was a natural leader and a tough and courageous fighter. Kaufman fought in some fifteen major battles including Glendale, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. This biography features not only the career of Colonel Kaufman but also a summary history of his first regiment, the First Pennsylvania Reserves. Of particular interest in his personal career was his dramatic capture on the Bermuda Hundred Peninsula and the heartwarming story of the return of his pistol by his Confederate captor some thirty years after the war.

While the Battle of Gettysburg is often remembered for Chamberlain's dramatic defense of Little Round Top, Pickett and Pettigrew's tragic charge, and the stand of the "Iron Brigade," less-remembered units like the 151st Pennsylvania were also crucial in the Civil War's most famous battle. The 151st lost over 72 percent of its men to death, wounds, or capture, the second-highest-percentage loss of all Federal units at the battle. This is the account of that courageous unit and its role in this decisive moment in American history.

The Battle of Gettysburg was a scene of roiling chaos. Thousands of casualties and an unexpected Union retreat left the field and its soldiers in utter confusion. It was in the midst of this uproar that Brigadier General Thomas A. Rowley, U.S.A., was arrested for drunkenness and disobedience. But what really happened on that chaotic day, and how did it affect Rowley and those around him in the years to come? A military man for many years, Rowley had served during the Mexican War and had worked his way up from second lieutenant to colonel. When the fighting began at Fort Sumter, he immediately offered his services to the Union Army. This volume chronicles Rowley's life up to the July 1, 1863, battle that ended his military career, with particular attention to the events of that fateful day. The author discusses the court martial's questionable guilty verdict and Rowley's reaction to it, as well as his role in a confrontation between Major General George Meade and G.K. Warren shortly after Lincoln and Stanton reversed the court martial's finding. Subsequent events in the careers of other participants including Lieutenant Colonel Rufus Dawes and Major General Abner Doubleday are also discussed. Sources include personal letters and diaries of the men who served with and under General Rowley. Pertinent information regarding the military rules of the period is provided in order to reveal how Rowley's case deviated from the norm. Finally, appendices provide a list of Rowley's commands, a roll of the court martial participants and Rowley's personal defense statement.

Allan Nevins describes this unique and dramatic journal as "the most comprehensive and historically useful field diary by a Civil War officer that I have seen." Colonel (later Brevet Brigadier General) Wainwright of the 1st Regiment New York Volunteer Light Infantry, Army of the Potomac, kept this diary from the battles of Williamsburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, to Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomatox. But this is a story, too, of the more ordinary events of war -- picking blackberries in a field, listening to the chirp of early bluebirds, struggling through endless mud, enjoying a rare festive occasion like the Thanksgiving Day dinner of champagne, "green turtle soup a la tin can and Roast Turkey a la 'Hard Tack.'" Wainwright sets down penetrating, and sometimes prejudiced, observations of the commanding generals -- McClellan, Hooker, Burnside, Meade, and Grant; and of those who commanded them -- Stanton ("I do not like his looks") and President Lincoln ("I was ashamed to think that such a gawk was President of the United States"). His journals, culled here and annotated by Allan Nevins from five handwritten volumes, are an important Civil War find.
