Excerpt from A Commercial Geography of the World of the World Influence of Climate and Relief on Commerce and Industry. Natural Regions. The foundation of a knowledge of commercial geography is a knowledge of the different Natural Regions of the World and their products. It is neces sary to know where different products are found, and why they are found there. Most products of plant and animal origin depend on the climate of a region. The contrast between the rich vegetation of the hot wet equatorial forest and the bareness of the hot dry desert of the Sahara, or of the icy desert of the polar regions is obvious. On climate depend the distribution of natural vegetation and (in part) of animals in the natural state, and also the ability of man to cultivate certain plants or domesticate certain animals in certain regions. In connexion with climate there have to be considered physical features. The study of land-forms bears not only upon the questions of distribution above mentioned, but especially upon the means of transport. Climate and weather affect also transport, especially by sea. The direction, variability, and strength of the winds determine certain routes, especially of sailing Ships. Even on land if the climate is too dry it may be difficult for man to supply himself, his beast of burden or his railway locomotive, with water. The distribution of mineral products does not depend on climate, but man's ability to work a mineral deposit profitably is often dependent on it. For instance, we Shall see how difficult. Excerpt from A Short Commercial Geography Geography is a study of the earth from the stand point of Man, and Commercial Geography is simply that part of the Science which is specially concerned with Man's wants. That is to say, it is a study of the earth from the standpoint of the intelligent merchant, who wishes to know where he can get the largest amount of the usual commodities, in the best condition, at the least cost, and with the greatest regularity. The essential point is a thorough knowledge of the typical conditions under which the commodities are, or may be, produced; and it is the office of Commercial Geography to supply this knowledge. It is a cause for regret, therefore, that in various ways Commercial Geography has been either made a matter of cram, ' or confused with Political Economy and Commerce. Knowledge of the theory of ex change and of actual commercial operations is of infinite value in actual business but neither the one nor the other has, I think, any direct place in a text-book of Commercial Geography. If this conception of the Science is correct, it is obvious that variable statistics and similar burdens on, or appeals to, the memory should be avoided; and that the typical conditions for the production of necessaries should be emphasised. And the Science can be called truly educational only if it leaves much to the initiative and co-operation of the student, simply providing a basis for ascertained facts and generalisations and for analysing.
