Léon l'Africain ou, si l'on préfère, Hasan al-Wazzân est resté célèbre comme l'auteur d'un texte sur le monde de l'Islam qui, dès sa publication à Venise en 1550, est devenu l'une des sources majeures de l'histoire sociale du Maghreb et de l'Afrique sahélienne pour la période des "siècles obscurs". Avec sa Description de l'Afrique, il fournissait en effet au monde chrétien, qui ne s'y risquait guère, un document de premier ordre qui allait être méthodiquement scruté par des historiens de tous bords et, parmi eux, l'un des plus grands orientalistes français, Louis Massignon. La connaissance de Léon l'Africain a été considérablement renouvelée après qu'une biographie romancée d'Amin Maalouf a connu un succès de librairie. On s'est préoccupé alors de revenir à un auteur resté longtemps effacé derrière son oeuvre. Ce jeune musulman andalou, voyageur aventureux et chargé sans doute de quelque mission diplomatique, capturé par des corsaires chrétiens, fut donné au pape qui eut le souci d'écouter son témoignage, avant de le convertir et de l'adopter (d'où son nom). Quand l'écho du livre atteignit l'Europe cultivée, son auteur avait quitté Rome depuis longtemps, peut-être pour disparaître en terre d'Islam. Voilà bien un personnage de roman ! Il s'en est suivi des débats sur une figure qui peut représenter le modèle du passeur de frontières, personnalité métisse telle que l'on aime aujourd'hui en imaginer. Pourtant, avec les réveils identitaires qui marquent l'époque contemporaine, ce personnage hybride a pu être aussi considéré par les siens comme un transfuge ou un renégat. Des historiens de la littérature, du voyage, de l'économie sociale du Maghreb et de l'Afrique au sortir du Moyen Age confrontent ici leurs méthodes dans l'approche de ce texte ancien. L'oeuvre et le personnage de Léon sont l'occasion de conduire une épistémologie historique des relations entre cultures différentes mais communicantes : anciennes et modernes, d'Orient et d'Occident.
