This book grew out of the conference, Women Practicing Buddhism: American Experiences, held at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 2005. The conference brought together students, scholars, Buddhist teachers, practitioners, artists, activists, and healers to explore the diverse experiences of women practising Buddhism in contemporary America. The pieces here centre on issues of practice, bringing to bear women's particular experiences of Buddhism as it is spreading to North America and taking root in new contexts. They celebrate the ways in which women are changing Buddhism and explore the array of issues that women as Buddhists face today. Contributors include those recognizable as Buddhist teachers, as well as well-known (and even famous) practitioners.

Does Transnational Mobilization Work For Language Minorities written by André Michael Hein and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Political Science categories.

This study scrutinizes the significance of transnational mobilization for language minorities, both with regard to their ability and their motivation to undertake such action. It is designed as interpretative case study on Romanian minorities in the post-communist countries of Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Hungary. The book concentrates on immobile and marginal groups outside the focus of international politics and research. It contributes to recent research on cosmopolitanism: only an in-depth study of actors' everyday reality can produce qualified claims on the tense relationship between local rootedness on the one hand and possibilities for international mobility on the other. This, in turn, is vital to assess the vigor of international processes such as globalization and European integration. Degrees Of Explicitness written by John Leafgren and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book explores factors relevant in the choices speakers and writers make in regard to explicitness of reference to the subjects and objects in their utterances. Bulgarian is a particularly felicitous target language for this type of study, since it possesses a rich inventory of available packaging techniques, ranging from zero reference, to various stressed and unstressed single forms, to actual doubled (“reduplicated”) constructions. The study systematically addresses the need to avoid referential and grammatical ambiguity, and the crucial influence of emphasis. Another, and perhaps most interesting central factor is the status of what the communication is about, which is assessed on two different levels. The book makes use of data from both published Bulgarian fiction and naturally occurring oral conversations. The fundamental similarities between these modes of communication with respect to noun phrase selection is demonstrated, but explanations are also proposed for the observable differences.

This collection of essays is the first volume in a new series, Oxford Studies on the Roman Economy. Edited by the series editors, it focuses on the economic performance of the Roman empire, analysing the extent to which Roman political domination of the Mediterranean and north-west Europe created the conditions for the integration of agriculture, production, trade, and commerce across the regions of the empire. Using the evidence of both documents and archaeology, the contributors suggest how we can derive a quantified account of economic growth and contraction in the period of the empire's greatest extent and prosperity.

Intra And Interlingual Translation In Flux written by Višnja Jovanović and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-17 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book extends new lines of inquiry on intra- and interlingual translation, building on Jakobson’s classification of translational relations to take into account the full complexity of language and the role of social dimensions in fostering linguistic unity and identity. Jovanović argues that intra- and interlingual translation do not form a stable relationship but, in fact, are both contingent on how languages and their borders are defined. Chapters unpack the causes and effects of this instability through the lens of Serbo- Croatian literature, where the impact of sociopolitical pressure on language over time can be keenly observed. Drawing on work from translation studies, sociolinguistics, close reading, distant reading, and discourse analysis, Jovanović charts how linguistic fluidity, where linguistic borders are challenged at both the macro and the micro level as a result of sociopolitical change, in turns shapes literary and cultural circulation. In its examination of the intersection of the linguistic and social in translational relations in the Serbo- Croatian context, the book can offer wider insights into better understanding the literary and translational landscape of analogous sociolinguistic and geographic milieus. This volume will be of interest to scholars in literary translation, translation theory, sociology of translation, comparative literature, and multilingualism.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.
