Brazil, Land of the Past scrutinizes the ideological roots of the so-called New Right in Brazil. The book traces the continuity and resilience of a system of thought based on the idea of a God-given hierarchical order to be defended against any social contract and modernizing relativization. It explains in detail how today a diverse movement — which includes actors ranging from the authoritarian Bolsonaro wing to economic liberals to the military to both Catholic and evangelical religious conservatives – assumes unanimously the ideas of this tradition as underlying premises of their political action. Though not always explicitly, this drives the self-declared “liberal-conservative” but rather anti-modernist reaction which claims to liberate an imaginary authentic “Brazil” from an aberrant “State” – and in so doing intends to preserve inherited privilege in an extremely unequal society.

The Practice of Politics in Postcolonial Brazil traces the history of high and low politics in nineteenth-century Brazil from the vantage point of the provincial capital of Porto Alegre. In the immediate postcolonial period, new ideas about citizenship and freedom were developing, and elites struggled for control of the state as the lower classes sought inclusion in political life. In a shift from the Liberal Party to Positivist or Conservative rule during the bloody Federalist Revolt of 1893-1895, new leaders sought to bring about a more balanced structure of government where the capitalist was sympathetic to the worker, and the worker more passive toward the elite. This represented a complete change of opinions—a new regime of ideas. Termed a "scientific" approach by its proponents, the movement was based on historical process and would be brought about through civic education. Against the backdrop of the abolition of slavery and subsequent assimilation, the rise of European immigration, and industrialization, Kittleson investigates how "the people" shaped changing political ideologies and practices, and how through local struggles and changes in elite ideology, the lower classes in Porto Alegre won limited political inclusion that was denied elsewhere.

Perspectives comparatistes, realizado em Paris, na Escola de Altos Estudos em Ciências Sociais, nos dias 30 e 31 de maio de 2017. Naquele momento, a preocupação dos organizadores enquanto historiadores era com a derrubada de uma presidente eleita sem uma sólida justificativa constitucional e as prováveis consequências desse acontecimento para a democracia brasileira. As reflexões que atravessam as intervenções do colóquio que ora publicamos carregam as seguintes interrogações: em qual escala temporal pensar o estremecimento da democracia brasileira representada pelo impeachment de 2016? Trata-se de um backlash conservador, historicamente disposto a desprezar a ordem democrática quando os interesses das classes dominantes, ou até mesmo apenas as hierarquias simbólicas, são ameaçadas? Ou o processo de erosão da democracia brasileira está ligado ao tempo curto de uma dessecularização de algumas sociedades ocidentais, de uma ofensiva da “Nova Direita”, de um consenso em torno da imposição de uma ordem neoliberal, algumas vezes ao preço de medidas “iliberais” e até mesmo antidemocráticas? Em outros termos, o terremoto de 2015-2016 estava há muito tempo presente em germe no funcionamento institucional brasileiro, ou ele é resultado de uma aceleração da história, de um contexto que vai muito além do Brasil?
