Este livro é resultado de um estudo realizado no âmbito do Doutoramento em Geriatria e Gerontologia, que permitiu compreender a Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos como um espaço complexo, controlado e ambiguamente vivido na concretização da sua missão de cuidar a Pessoa Idosa em situação crítica e os seus Familiares. Tendo como suporte o referencial teórico-conceptual inspirado na Sociologia Simbólica de Pierre Bourdieu concluiu-se que os profissionais de saúde desenvolvem esforços para proporcionar um cuidado integral, humano e competente. Contudo, as especificidades do contexto intensivo associadas ao modelo de gestão e relações de domínio, conduzem de forma não preponderante a situações promotoras de violência simbólica que precisam ser aprofundadas.
