The knock-limited performance of nine fuels, comprising isolated members of four classes of hydrocarbons, paraffins, cycloparaffins, and olefins), is presented in the form of three-dimensional plots of fuel-air ratio, compression temperature, and compression-air density. The plots are based on a correlation that is shown to apply for these fuels over a wide range of compression that is shown to apply for these fuels over a wide range of compression ratios and inlet-air temperatures. The significance of the term "temperature sensitivity" is sketched, and it is emphasized that no generalized number such as octane number can be applied even to members of a given class of hydrocarbons when broad ranges of engine severity are encountered.

A method of correlating the effects of compression ratio and inlet-air temperature on the knock limits of aviation fuels is presented. The knock-limited compression-air density when the piston is at top center is plotted against the compression temperature. Knock-limited performance tests of S-2 reference fuel, 28-R fuel, and a blend containing 50 percent triptane plus 4.53 mil TEL per gallon and 50 percent 28-R fuel in CFR engines were run to check the method; a description of these tests and the data obtained are included.

A theoretical analysis, based on the linearized equation for supersonic flow, of characteristics of triangular-tip control surfaces on thin triangular wings. By restriction to case for which Mach lines from wing apex lie behind the leading edge, a simplified treatment was possible; results of previous work on lift of triangular wings could be used to derive expressions for lift effectiveness, pitching moment, rolling-moment effectiveness, hinge moment due to control deflection, and hinge moment due to angle of attack. Comparisons were made with two-dimensional case.

The method of computing velocity and pressure distributions along wing profiles under the assumption of the simplified density-speed relation, outlined in NACA Technical Note 1006, is extended to the case of a nonsymmetrical profile and a flow with circulation. The shape of the profile, the speed of the undisturbed flow, and a parameter determing the angle of attack may be prescribed. The problem is reduced to a nonlinear integral equation which can be solved numerical by an iteration method. A numerical example is given.
