El área de Historia Contemporánea de la Universidad de Castilla – La Mancha organizó entre el 21 y el 23 de septiembre de 2016 la XIII edición del congreso bienal de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea (AHC). La Historia, lost in translation? consolidó y sometió a discusión y debate treinta y tres paneles, dirigidos por noventa y un coordinadores, que sumaron un total de cuatrocientos doce textos elaborados por cuatrocientos cincuenta y dos congresistas de diferentes nacionalidades. Estas actas recogen los resultados de treinta y uno de esos talleres, y doscientas ochenta y seis investigaciones. Después de trece ediciones, el proyecto bienal de congresos de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea (AHC) puede considerarse un referente como pocos de la investigación, la producción de conocimiento científico y su divulgación. Un éxito que debe ser alabado en la dimensión colectiva de un acontecimiento académico al que han contribuido el buen hacer de los organizadores de las ediciones precedentes, el trabajo continuado de la Asociación –desde sus órganos de dirección al último de los socios–, y el esfuerzo siempre generoso de quienes a lo largo de todos estos años han participado con sus investigaciones y conocimientos. Los comunicantes son y han sido el verdadero sostén de nuestros congresos, lo que les convierte en acreedores de este minúsculo reconocimiento por contribuir a hacer un poco mejor cada vez nuestra disciplina.

In Spagna, più che altrove, il XVII secolo è il secolo dei santi. Non solo per l'elevazione agli altari di quell'inedito manipolatore di uomini e donne le cui virtù furono riconosciute da Roma nel 1622, ma in senso più ampio, a causa della posizione di crocevia che la monarchia ispanica aveva tra il Mediterraneo e l'Atlantico. Specchio tra due mari, la penisola iberica, vedeva riflessa nella sua luna interna la fonte di esempi di vita cristiana della chiesa primitiva, giganteschi o distorti, secondo il taglio e la recinzione dello scrittore religioso, anche se quasi sempre riconoscibili, come quelle ombre sfigurate che lasciavano trasparire i vetri spessi incorniciati da legni nobili che registrano gli inventari dell'epoca. Un po' più vicino allo specchio ispanico, gli archetipi della santità imitabile o ammirevole del tardo medioevo, santità militante, di clausura o guerriera, che mostrava un florilegio di esempi di vita vocazionale, sulla sedia, sul pulpito, nel convento e persino per i modi.

"Today, architectural plans and drawings are always signposted with colors: pink for poché, or exterior walls, yellow for certain interior elements, and blue for details and ornament. How and why did this practice begin? The craft of architectural drawing-plans, sections, and details-was originally developed during the Italian Renaissance under the influence of engravers. The results were correspondingly monochromatic, relying on representation through line and perspective. But in the 1800s, an influx of painters-turned-architects in Holland and Germany brought color into their designs. This innovation eventually spread throughout Europe, inspiring French architectural engineers to adopt a common color system in order to more clearly communicate their designs across the kingdom, and giving architects another tool with which to impress academic juries and the public. In this book, author Basile Baudez argues that color was not an essential feature of architectural drawing until European architects adopted a precise system of representation in response to political and artistic rivalry between countries, as well as the needs of public exhibitions. He shows that French engineers learned to use color from the Dutch colleagues they worked with and then fought against during the Dutch War (1672-78), demonstrating that a color-based system was published in French manuals for military engineers and used by royal architects, and that architects who wanted to compete with paintings for the public's attention needed to use the familiar language of color. This history reveals that color came to have three functions: to imitate architectural materials, to establish concise representational conventions that could span large geographic distances, and to seduce the public, including tourists. The book will feature a large number of fascinating, previously unpublished archival drawings, and will contribute to growing interest in the origins and professionalization of architecture, as well as the history of drawing as a medium"--

Military Entrepreneurs and the Spanish Contractor State in the Eighteenth Century offers a new approach to the relationship between warfare and state construction. Historians looking at how war funding impinged on state development, and how state growth made wars more significant, have tended to downplay the role of military-provisioning entrepreneurs. Written off as corrupt and selfish, these entrepreneurs jarred with the received view of a rationally growing and modernising state. This volume shows that the state-entrepreneur relationship was much more fluid and constant than previously thought. The state was not able to enforce a top-down military supply policy; at the same time it benefited from the entrepreneurs' collaboration and their shared mercantilist ambitions. The entrepreneurs' mobilisation of military supplies was crucial for extending state authority and helped to knit together national and colonial markets. But this fluid state-entrepreneur relationship gradually became shrouded in privileges and monopolies, not so much ideology driven or imposed by the entrepreneurs but rather as an arrangement exploited by the state to boost its control over them, whittling down middlemen and ensuring the solvency and creditworthiness of the chosen few. This arrangement spiralled into a risky inter-dependence and cramped entrepreneurial competition. Rafael Torres Sanchez furnishes new insights into the role of military entrepreneurs in debates about warfare and state construction.
