Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Chemistry - Other, grade: 87.125%, University of Ghana, Legon, language: English, abstract: The controversy faced with the origin of petroleum is still an ongoing debate. The people who have carried out research demonstrated that at least some of the chemistry of the abiogenic theory can occur within the earth and if it proves to be the correct mechanism, it could explain the abundance of oil within the earth as well as offering the hope of much more remains and that it is possible to replenish the oil supplies. But this does not suffice as proof as the one and only mechanism for the formation of oil either. The biogenic (fossil) theory advocates have exhibited solid evidences on their side but on the other hand, the followers of abiogenic theory also have important evidences which cannot be denied. There is clearly no doubt that Sedimentary rocks that have been formed without no involvement of these abiotic hydrocarbons are suitable form commercial hydrocarbons deposits and thereby lead to dry holes. They concluded that abiotic sources are the major contributor in the commercial accumulations of hydrocarbons. But a well-balanced theory should be a major requirement which will help future hydrocarbon exploration efficiently.

Elements of Petroleum Geology, Fourth Edition is a useful primer for geophysicists, geologists and petroleum engineers in the oil industry who wish to expand their knowledge beyond their specialized area. It is also an excellent introductory text for a university course in petroleum geoscience. This updated edition includes new case studies on non-conventional exploration, including tight oil and shale gas exploration, as well as coverage of the impacts on petroleum geology on the environment. Sections on shale reservoirs, flow units and containers, IOR and EOR, giant petroleum provinces, halo reservoirs, and resource estimation methods are also expanded. Written by a preeminent petroleum geologist and sedimentologist with decades of petroleum exploration in remote corners of the world Covers information pertinent to everyone working in the oil and gas industry, especially geophysicists, geologists and petroleum reservoir engineers Fully revised with updated references and expanded coverage of topics and new case studies

Natural Gas Seepage written by Giuseppe Etiope and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-30 with Science categories.

The book offers a modern, comprehensive, and holistic view of natural gas seepage, defined as the visible or invisible flow of gaseous hydrocarbons from subsurface sources to Earth’s surface. Beginning with definitions, classifications for onshore and offshore seepage, and fundamentals on gas migration mechanisms, the book reports the latest findings for the global distribution of gas seepage and describes detection methods. Seepage implications are discussed in relation to petroleum exploration, environmental impacts (hazards, pollution, atmospheric emissions, and past climate change), emerging scientific issues (abiotic gas and methane on Mars), and the role of seeps in ancient cultures. With an updated bibliography and an integrated analysis of available data, the book offers a new fundamental awareness - gas seepage is more widespread than previously thought and influences all of Earth’s external “spheres”, including the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere.

The first work of its kind, Volcanic Reservoirs in Petroleum Exploration summarizes the current research and exploration techniques of volcanic reservoirs as a source of oil and gas. With a specific focus on the geological features and development characteristics of volcanic reservoirs in China, it presents a series of practical exploration and evaluation techniques based on this research. Authored by an award-winning petroleum geologist, it introduces exploration and outcome prediction techniques that can be used by scientists in any volcanic region worldwide. Volcanic reservoirs as new sources of petroleum resources are a hot topic in petroleum exploration. Although volcanic rock cannot generate hydrocarbons, it can serve as a reservoir for hydrocarbons when conditions permit. This book explains the differences between volcanic reservoirs and other major reservoir types, and describes effective methods for examining volcanic distribution and predicting volcanic reservoirs, providing a framework for systematic studies throughout the world. Includes an entire section dedicated to current trends in volcanic prediction and evaluation technology More than 90 full-color photos illustrate the text in greater detail Case studies conclude each chapter, helping scientists apply the book's concepts to real-life scenarios
