Beschrieben werden 102 Handschriften vom 9. bis zum fruhen 16. Jahrhundert, dazu 14 aus Bucheinbanden abgeloste Handschriftenfragmente, von denen die altesten bis in den Zeitraum zwischen 800 und 1100 zuruckreichen. Bis auf neun deutschsprachige Codices und funf Fragmente handelt es sichum lateinische Handschriften. In inhaltlicher Hinsicht steht die Theologie mit einem Anteil von etwa der Halfte im Vordergrund; etwa ein Drittel entfallt auf die Medizin und die Naturwissenschaften (Pharmazie, Alchemie, Astronomie), wahrend der Rest sich aus literarischen, philologischen, historischen und juristischen (insbesondere kanonistischen) Werken zusammensetzt. Als interessant verdient hervorgehoben zu werden, dass uber die Halfte des Bestandes nichthessischer Provenienz ist: 23 Handschriften stammen aus Zurich oder Umgebung und sind im 17. Jahrhundert uber den Zurcher Theologen und Alchemisten Raphael Egli (Iconius, gest. 1622) nach Marburg gelangt, und insgesamt 31 Handschriften sind ursprunglich in den norddeutschen Klostern Bursfelde und Corvey beheimatet gewesen und in napoleonischer Zeit nach Marburg uberfuhrt worden

[ITA] Il Regno di Sicilia, in età normanna e sveva, costituisce una realtà politico-amministrativa unitaria, ma assai multiforme nei suoi compositi tratti etnici, sociali e territoriali. Con tale varietà i sovrani dell’Italia meridionale seppero confrontarsi, dando compiuta e piena dimostrazione delle loro qualità politiche e dei loro interessi intellettuali, delineando precisi indirizzi culturali e di governo. Se l’Università di Napoli, fondata nel 1224, rappresentò la piena espressione della volontà e della lungimiranza politica di un grande re e imperatore come Federico II, anche l’attività amministrativa fu un formidabile strumento di regolamentazione istituzionale e ideologica del Regno. Questo è il campo di indagine del presente volume che, in particolare, pone l’attenzione sulle strategie organizzative tanto della cultura quanto della politica. Esse culminarono certamente nei decenni dominati dall’eccezionale figura di Federico II, ma furono predisposte dai suoi immediati predecessori normanni e – proseguite compiutamente dai suoi figli Corrado e Manfredi – non furono del tutto scardinate neanche dai sovrani della dinastia angioina. [ENG] The Kingdom of Sicily, in the Norman and Swabian age, was a unitary political-administrative entity, but very multiform in its composite ethnic, social and territorial features. The Kings of southern Italy were able to deal with this variety: by giving a complete demonstration of their political qualities and intellectual interests, they outlined precise cultural and governmental guidelines. The University of Naples, founded in 1224, represented the full expression of the will and political farsightedness of a great king and emperor like Frederick II, but also the administrative activity was a formidable instrument of institutional and ideological regulation of the Kingdom. This is the field of investigation of this volume which focuses, in particular, on the organizational strategies of both culture and politics. They certainly culminated in the decades dominated by the exceptional figure of Frederick II, but were prepared by his immediate Norman predecessors and – fully continued by his sons Conrad and Manfred – they were not completely unhinged even by the rulers of the Angevin dynasty.

Intorno alla figura dell’imperatore Federico II di Svevia (1194-1250) si sono sedimentate tante e tali leggende, da renderne quasi del tutto indistinguibili i tratti reali e autentici. Già al momento della sua nascita fu salutato come l’apportatore dell’età dell’oro, di quella felice età, agli albori del mondo, in cui uomini e animali potevano vivere liberamente senza temersi a vicenda e senza fatica. Poi venne identificato con l’Imperatore messianico della fine dei tempi e con l’Anticristo; fu scomunicato e venne acclamato come il liberatore della cristianità; fu accusato di aver pronunciato immonde bestemmie e fu celebrato come il nuovo David liberatore del Santo Sepolcro. Dunque, la sua fisionomia storica si è persa e confusa entro le linee evanescenti di una mitizzazione che ha cominciato ben presto la sua opera pervasiva e corrosiva. Esaminando i testi encomiastici di Pietro da Eboli, di Pier della Vigna, di Nicola da Bari e di Terrisio di Atina, si ricostruisce e si ridisegna la complessa ideologia politica che guidò le azioni del grande Svevo attraverso inquiete attese millenaristiche, elaborate progettazioni culturali e ineludibili tradizioni giuridico-istituzionali. Ne risulta che i suoi atti e i suoi gesti furono costantemente guidati da intricate strategie propagandistiche, alle quali fu affidato il compito di rivelare e diffondere i misteri inspiegabili di quel supremo ente politico e spirituale che fu l’impero medievale.
