O jornalista, crítico e poeta Mário Faustino (1930-1962) via o escritor como um intérprete de sua época e de seu povo, fortemente ligado ao presente histórico. Ao mesmo tempo, acreditava que o poeta deveria ser capaz de identificar a beleza na tradição e seguir inovando para se projetar no futuro. Para ele, a função social do poeta era agir por meio da linguagem, modificando a língua e, por extensão, as formas de pensamento e de percepção do mundo.Suas idéias sobre poesia começaram a aparecer nas páginas do Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil, na coluna Poesia-Experiência, que Faustino manteve entre 1956 e 1959. Nela, o escritor criticava a letargia da poesia, da crítica e do jornalismo literários brasileiros. Defendia uma linguagem menos discursiva, que procurasse apresentar em vez de representar o objeto. Para ele, o poema era um corpo vivo, orgânico, do qual nenhuma parte poderia ser suprimida e ao qual nada poderia ser acrescentado. Por detrás dessa concepção da literatura estava o objetivo de infundir a escrita da experiência vivida e de devolver à vida o artesanato da palavra poética.De suas diversas influências, Faustino escolheu uma frase do poeta Ezra Pound como lema para a sua prática literária: "Repetir para aprender, criar para inovar". Para cumprir esse programa, o poeta utilizou procedimentos criativos típicos de outras artes - como a colagem cubista, tomada das artes plásticas, e a montagem, emprestada do cinema do diretor russo Sergei Eisenstein. Os poetas que lhe serviram de inspiração foram, principalmente, Stéphane Mallarmé e T.S. Eliot.O homem e sua hora foi o único livro de Mário Faustino publicado em vida. Este primeiro volume de sua obra poética e crítica traz também poemas esparsos, publicados entre 1948 e 1962, os "fragmentos poéticos" escritos entre 1960 e 1961, além de poemas inéditos, estabelecidos e fixados a partir dos originais guardados por seu amigo Benedito Nunes.

The best-selling English translation of the mysterious and cosmic Greek poetry known as the Orphic Hymns. At the very beginnings of the Archaic Age, the great singer Orpheus taught a new religion that centered around the immortality of the human soul and its journey after death. He felt that achieving purity by avoiding meat and refraining from committing harm further promoted the pursuit of a peaceful life. Elements of the worship of Dionysus, such as shape-shifting and ritualistic ecstasy, were fused with Orphic beliefs to produce a powerful and illuminating new religion that found expression in the mystery cults. Practitioners of this new religion composed a great body of poetry, much of which is translated in The Orphic Hymns. The hymns presented in this book were anonymously composed somewhere in Asia Minor, most likely in the middle of the third century AD. At this turbulent time, the Hellenic past was fighting for its survival, while the new Christian faith was spreading everywhere. The Orphic Hymns thus reflect a pious spirituality in the form of traditional literary conventions. The hymns themselves are devoted to specific divinities as well as to cosmic elements. Prefaced with offerings, strings of epithets invoke the various attributes of the divinity and prayers ask for peace and health to the initiate. Apostolos N. Athanassakis and Benjamin M. Wolkow have produced an accurate and elegant translation accompanied by rich commentary.

A gorgeous facsimile of the epochal collaboration between Mallarmé and Manet that inspired Nijinsky's most famous dance The second published collaboration between Stéphane Mallarmé and Édouard Manet (after Mallarmé's translation of Poe's "The Raven"), L'après-midi d'un faune is one of the poet's best-known works. It provided the basis for Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), which in turn inspired Nijinsky's ballet L'après-midi d'un faune, first performed in Paris in 1912, with Nijinsky famously dancing the title role. Mallarmé's poem unfolds in a sensual reverie as a Pan-like faun, arising from slumber, recollects his encounters with two forest nymphs in a monologue filled with pastoral and erotic allusions. For Mallarmé, such publications were total works, with attention paid to every detail of layout, typography, punctuation and artwork. For the original 1876 publication, Manet created four wood engravings: two drawings that open and close the poem, and a frontispiece and ex-libris sheet that the artist hand-tinted with pink wash. This volume reproduces that first edition at full size accompanied by a new translation.

Nestes haigas , ou poemas-desenhos (a categoria mais plástica da poesia oriental, segundo Blyth), o que se busca é passar o perfume de uma ideia-emoção com brevidade, humor e sentido. Os temas costumam ser os lances mais banais; coisas máximas vistas de um modo mínimo e vice-versa. Menos é mais. Por isso, tudo passa a impressão de um certo inacabamento, criando vazios que devem ser completados pelo leitor. Leminski: “no Japão, o haiku é parte de um conjunto plástico maior: vem como integrante de um desenho que mantém com o texto relações gráficas muito íntimas”. Aqui, em simbiose com os de zen hos de João, feito fosse um acidente provocado, um relaxo caprichado, texto e imagem, traço e gesto nascem juntos. Tanto no talhe da palavra quanto no detalhe do traço, o haiga quer ser simples, conciso, rústico quase tosco, quase ingênuo. Tudo é mostrado em takes com crueza e intensidade, mas sempre rápidos e certeiros, como tudo em Leminski, que dizia buscar a graça do gesto irrepetível, a emoção captada em pleno ar: há a confissão da dor, da impermanência das coisas, mas sempre com muito humor, virtú e simplicidade. Transitando distraidamente entre o apolíneo e o dionisíaco, em winterverno Leminski mostra que tudo pode ser motivo de poesia. E afirma o quanto a vida pode brilhar nas mãos de um poeta. Sabendo, como ele dizia, que “é a linguagem que está a serviço da vida, não a vida a serviço da linguagem”. Depois do corpo de poemas inéditos que veio à luz com La Vie en Close e do deslumbrante Metaformose , recém-lançado, podemos agora curtir esse winterverno , fruto de um diálogo Intersemiótico com João Suplicy. Entre as inúmeras formas de associação gráfica entre imagem e verbo em nossa época — da ilustração à legenda, do caligrama ao logotipo, da pintura escrita à poesia visual, do cartaz à HQ — winterverno tem uma face singular. A síntese verbal de Leminski e o traçado conciso de João se afinaram com muita naturalidade, numa conversa que nos aproxima da condição do hai-kai , em sua origem ideogramática (dois invernos diferentes formando o mesmo). Aqui os códigos verbal e visual se alimentam mutuamente, ora se complementando, ora se tensionando; ora se traduzindo, ora acrescentando um ao outro novas significações. O resultado é de uma sintonia surpreendente, que muitas vezes incorpora e exibe dados sobre a situação do encontro em que foram feitos — com margem para o salto, o voo, o insight — e toda sorte de coincidências. A simplicidade e a liberdade com que essa relação se faz, tão intimamente, faz lembrar, por vezes, o Nascimento Vida Paixão e Morte , de Pagu, o Romance da Época Anarquista , diário de Oswald e Pagu, ou o Perfeito Cozinheiro de Almas deste Mundo , diário da garconnière de Oswald - obras/não-obras onde o verbal e o visual se misturam, como a própria criação se mistura à vida. Além de momentos altamente concentrados da poesia de Leminski; além da riqueza de soluções gráficas exploradas por João em seus desenhos; além da delicada interação dos dois códigos; o mais belo desse livro me parece a forma como ele incorpora em si o processo de sua feitura — exposto no raio x dos suportes precários onde inicialmente o diálogo foi se fazendo (e que compõem sua segunda parte). Rabiscados em folhetos publicitários, guardanapos de bar, pedaços de embalagens, folhas de caderno, a matéria-prima que houvesse na hora; os registros nos mostram a urgência da criação contaminada de vida, contaminando a vida, na captação de seus instantâneos. Um livro que foi se fazendo quase sem querer, e que foi se fazendo querer até tornar se um projeto comum de Paulo e João; da expressão espontânea de uma afinidade à descoberta de uma linguagem.
