Thrilling true stories of female adventurers from around the world. Throughout history, women seeking adventure often faced opposition. But here are 25 remarkable women — from pilots to mountain climbers, deep-sea divers to Antarctic explorers — who defied expectations and made history. Included are Bessie Coleman, famously known as the first Black woman to earn a pilot’s license (two years before Amelia Earhart!). But readers will also learn about lesser-known women, such as Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, and Arunima Sinha, the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest. Though their experiences are all different, these women have one thing in common: they didn’t let anything get in the way of their dreams! Watch out world, the next generation of adventurers are about to get inspired.

Jean Henderson was quite a young girl when she determined that she would become a nurse and go to work overseas "to help those poor folk who needed care." This ambition led to her training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in General Nursing, then Midwifery education, working for a time in Bush Nursing hospitals and eventually being called for Missionary service. Jean was posted to Papua New Guinea in January 1946, just months after World War II in the Pacific ended, and found a world still reeling from its effects. She stayed until after Independence from Australia was celebrated in September 1975. A Daring Woman traces Jean's story from her earliest days, through those amazing years in Papua New Guinea, to her life as a Nurse Educator and Matron following her return to Australia. There were challenges and adventures in every role she undertook and the way Jean approached them, even in retirement, was both inspiring and sometimes very funny. Like most of us, Jean was not always right but there was always in her actions a deep commitment both to nursing and to her God.

Now more than ever, the world is recognizing how strong women and girls are. How strong? In the early 1920s, Aboriginal Alaskan expeditioner Ada Blackjack survived for two years as a castaway on an uninhabited island in the Arctic Ocean before she was finally rescued. And she’s just one example. The Girl Who Rode a Shark: And Other Stories of Daring Women is a rousing collection of biographies focused on women and girls who have written, explored, or otherwise plunged headfirst into the pages of history. Undaunted by expectations, they made their mark by persevering in pursuit of their passions. The tales come from a huge variety of times and places, from a Canadian astronaut to an Indian secret agent and to a Balkan pirate queen who stood up to Ancient Rome. Author and activist Ailsa Ross gives readers a fun, informative piece of nonfiction that emphasizes the boundless potential of a new generation of women. Stunning portraits by artist Amy Blackwell accompany every biography in bold, vibrant colours.
