Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God - Philippians 4:6 What is prayer? It's no secret, but in my personal experience, this is a question that has been difficult to answer, I think because it's over analyzed. However, at its root, prayer is extremely simple. Prayer is talking to God. Now, here's where it gets complicated. See, the God of the universe who created everything actually cares about us individually enough that He wants to talk to us. God wants a relationship with us, and rather than require us to go through people, He's created a direct-line connection in the form of prayer, but if you talk to ten different people, you will likely get told ten different ways you're supposed to pray. This is not The way to pray, but it should help. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus starts by giving God praise, so that's a good place to start. However, praise is also about thanking God for what He's done, so I included a separate section to let you write what you're thankful for next. Starting by praising and thanking God focuses our mind on God alone, centering our mind and taking us from a me focus to a God focus. After praise, Jesus includes asking forgiveness of sins. Take the time to voice your sins specifically (if you don't write them, that's okay. This is between you and God, but sometimes letting other people in to how you're struggling). If prompted, now is also a good time to forgive others who have wronged you. A note about forgiveness: forgiveness can be hard. However, forgiveness is more than for the person who wronged you. It's also for giving yourself peace. You don't have to carry that burden anymore. Now we come to prayer requests. I start by having you think about people in your life who need prayer, because God says multiple times to pray for each other, and even to pray for your enemies. This brings your focus to others and looking out for others, taking care of God's community. After praying for people, now comes the asking for our personal concerns. God loves you and wants the best for you, and so He wants you to ask for things according to His will so that He can give them to you. I know, crazy to think the God of creation wants to give us gifts too. However, prayer is not just about talking. It's also about listening, so take some time to see what He's saying to you. He might give you images, verses, words, feelings, or sometimes He might speak audibly. Write that down. Lastly, if you pray, expect results. Think back to ways God has answered prayers already, and write those down. Then look back, take heart and remember God loves you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you. In Jesus' name, be blessed.
