Umberto Eco aborda a questão de três pontos de vista: a partir de alguns ensaios históricos, que retomam as definições da antiga estética indiana, da estética medieval e de algumas correntes dos últimos dois séculos; por meio de alguns ensaios teóricos, que examinam também as posições dos estudiosos contemporâneos; e mediante a inspeção do território das poéticas de vanguarda, para ver como e até que ponto as instâncias de tais poéticas se inserem nos quadros especulativos organizados pela estética. Estes ensaios mostram o traçado problemático que conduziu o autor à noção de "obra aberta" – já delineada e comentada nestes escritos – e à pesquisa sobre os problemas da comunicação que ocupou em seguida o centro de seus interesses.
