There has been a marked revival of interest among philosophers in the topic of friendship. This collection of fifteen essays presents an admirable range of the diverse contemporary approaches to friendship within philosophy. The book is divided into three sections. The first centers on the nature of friendship, the difference between friendship and other personal loves, and the importance of friendship in the individual's life. The second section discusses the moral significance of friendship and the response of various ethical theories and theorists (Aristotelian, Christian, Kantian, and consequentialist) to the phenomenon of friendship. The last section deals with the importance of personal and civic friendship in a good society. Badhwar's introduction is a comprehensive critical discussion of the issues raised by the essays: it relates them to each other, as well as to historical and contemporary discussions not included in the anthology, thus providing the reader with an integrated overview of the essays and their place in the larger philosophical picture. Contributors: Robert M. Adams; Julia Annas; Neera Kapur Badhwar; Marcia Baron; Lawrence Blum; Nathaniel Branden; John M. Cooper; Marilyn Friedman; C. S. Lewis; H. J. Paton; Peter Railton; Amelie O. The Philosophy Of Friendship written by M. Vernon and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-08 with Philosophy categories.

In this new accessible philosophy of friendship, Mark Vernon links the resources of the philosophical tradition with numerous illustrations from modern culture to ask what friendship is, how it relates to sex, work, politics and spirituality. Unusually, he argues that Plato and Nietzsche, as much as Aristotle and Aelred, should be put centre stage. Their penetrating and occasionally tough insights are invaluable if friendship is to be a full, not merely sentimental, way of life for today.

In the late 20th and 21st centuries, the meteoric rise of countless social media platforms and mobile applications have illuminated the profound need friendship and connection have in all of our lives; and yet, very few scholarly volumes have focused on this unique and important bond during this new era of relating to one another. Exploring such topics as friendship and social media, friendship with current and past romantic partners, co-workers, mentors, and even pets, editors Mahzad Hojjat and Anne Moyer lead an expert group of global contributors as they each explore how friendship factors within our lives today. What does it mean to be a friend? What roles do friendships play in our own development? How do we befriend those across the race, ethnicity, gender, and orientation spectrums? What happens when a friendship turns sour? What is the effect of friendship - good and bad - on our mental health? Providing a much needed update to the field of interpersonal relations, The Psychology of Friendship serves as a field guide for readers as they shed traditional definitions of friendship in favor of contemporary contexts and connections.

Today's women seem to underestimate the value of a good friend. Social networking sites, internet, email and mobile phones have devalued good old fashioned friendships in many ways. Technology is great to speed up the pace of our already fast paced life but why not slow down and take some time to get to know someone. To really know someone. Get some real friends that don't only like your Facebook status but actually know you enough to like who you are.I challenge you to join me on this journey to discover God's design and purpose for friendship. Friendships are powerful and highly valuable. Friendships are God's idea and a necessary part of His plan for planet earth. Friendships are good and they are worth the effort. The Cambridge dictionary's definition of friend is "a person who you know well and who you like a lot, but who is usually not a member of your family" or "someone who is not an enemy and who you can trust". The Bible however, goes much deeper and one of the original Hebrew word for friend is ray'-ah, ray'-ah which means companion, fellow, friend, husband, lover, neighbour and very interestingly comes from the root word raw-aw which means to tend a flock, that is, pasture it; intransitively to graze. I thought this was a beautiful illustration of the care and nurturing that is required to grow a good friendship. Another word for friend when the Bible speaks of being a 'friend of God' is philos in Greek which means to be actively fond. Isn't that a wonderful concept, to be actively fond of someone?Grab a cuppa coffee and join us as we explore what the Bible has to say about friendships. Laugh with us and cry with us, the end result will be great friendships which is so worth it!
