Excerpt from Greenland In the leading Poem of this Collection, the Author frankly acknowledges that he has so far failed, as to be under the necessity of sending it forth incomplete, or suppressing it altogether. Why he has not done the latter is of little importance to the Public, which will assuredly award him no more credit than his performance, taken as it is, can command; while the consequences of his temerity, or his misfortune, must remain wholly with himself. Excerpt from The History of Greenland, Vol. 1 of 2: Including an Account of the Mission Carried on by the United Brethren in That Country In bringing forward a new edition of Crantz's History of Greenland to the notice of the public, the editors have laboured under peculiar difficulties. While it seemed derogatory from the reputation of Crantz, as a writer of much genuine merit, and some celebrity among his countrymen, to metamorphose his work by alterations and curtailments, it was evident that the many minute details of trivial circumstances, the fatiguing mass of heavy narrative, and the numerous repetitions of the original publication, would tend to exhaust the attention of the reader, and obscure the real excellencies of the work. The style also of the original German, required considerable alteration, to adapt it to the more perspicuous and refined model of modern composition. We are hereby far from insinuating, that the language of our author is destitute of merit. It is in general simple, manly, correct, and energetic; and above all, possesses that fascinating charm, which sound judgment, united with veracity and integrity of purpose, can give to the production of a writer, though he be comparatively unskilled in the technicalities of composition. We may add, that Crantz's style will appear still more meritorious, when it is recollected, that as he wrote his book before the literature of Germany was ennobled, and its language refined, by the labours of a Schiller, a Wieland, or a Gothe, the works of his cotemporaries were chiefly remarkable for a certain clumsy strength, and could boast of very little beauty, or even propriety of diction. Danish Greenland written by Henry Rink and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-05 with Social Science categories.

Excerpt from Danish Greenland: Its People and Its Products Several reasons have led the author to believe that this work might have claims to other than Danish readers, and that an English edition might be desirable. Long ago the series of expeditions in search of a North-west passage and of Sir John Franklin and his companions drew some public attention to Greenland. The Danish establishments along the coast of Davis Strait, on the very threshold of the extensive polar regions explored and surveyed on these occasions, were frequently visited by the English vessels. But of late years expeditions aiming at a more general investigation of the regions around the North Pole have given rise to several grand and bold undertakings more or less connected with the extensive coasts of Greenland. What can be more adventurous than spending an Arctic winter in navigating the ocean on a piece of ice. And yet this has of late been achieved, once along the east and once along the west coast of Greenland. For very important special explorations of the remotest part of this country we have to thank the renowned American pioneers, Kane, Hayes, and Hall. On its desolate eastern shores a German expedition has made valuable discoveries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nature not only circumscribes the growth of culture in those regions; she also fixes, ao minimum except which the country is inaccessible. Only the culture capable of liberating itself from the forests arid of conquering the cold and darkness of the Arctic winter could find its way Into Greenland. Excerpt from The First Crossing of Greenland, Vol. 1 of 2 Thus it will be seen that both by physical train ing and by the habit of scientific research Dr. Nansen is well qualified for the task of exploration; his narrative will show that he is equally skilful in the use of his pen. Upwards of a year ago he married a daughter of the late Professor M. Sars, like his well-known son Professor 0. Sars, an eminent naturalist among many other.
