This book depicts the struggles and the hardships that a young girl endures growing up with a single parent background in a hostile ethnic environment where she was expected to live up to certain high standards. Caught in a vicious circle of false humility, hypocrisy, jealousy and competitiveness she was constantly ostracized for a crime beyond her control which is being the daughter of a high profile indigenous woman in the early 1960s till the mid 1980s. In retrospect, her mother was indeed very reputed and a respected member of society, was a Producer and Presenter for the ethnic womans program for the national radio station, hence a household name. She has travelled extensively around the globe representing her country many times. In comparison this childs life was a living hell, likened to living in a glass house where nothing is hidden and everything is under surveillance and the scrutiny of constant criticism, harsh comparisons with other children, suffering emotional and verbal abuse, mounting peer pressure and the overwhelming expectations to perform to an unreasonable standard. Most failing to realise, that the two although mother and daughter, are separate entities who in their own right are special, unique and belong to different generations. This occurred at a time where the norm was a life of respect and reverence for the chiefs and elders of the community. People are prone to act in a way of communal thinking and individuality is not really encouraged as emphasis is generally on the family reputation with little or no regard for the individuals that form the family. Unfortunately this practice still prevails today with some families back home which later cripples individuals and more so society. In spite of how she started, how it affected and marred her life, she fought to survive the best way she knew how. She made mistakes along the way but still she searched to find her answers. She never settled for seconds but will fight to get only the best of what she can get. Never one to live life lying or sitting down she opted to face her opponent standing and with eyes wide open. Truly unafraid and yet fragile enough to and for change. The battle is mostly won if you plan and brace yourself for the impact, though scarred but in time when healed, the enemy will eventually cease to win.

Sharon's life was perfect or so it seemed. She had one of the best paying jobs, a high flyer; climbing the career ladder at a pace most people could only imagine. Blessed with toys typical of the fast-paced life, state of the art automobiles, jetting from one city to another on vacation, and courted by the most eligible bachelor at work. What more can a girl possibly ask for? This was Sharon's life until a sleeping beast from the past rose and dealt her an eternal wound. She lost all that was dear to her and sank in to the lowest ebb of anger and depression. Left alone by family and friends, she turned to the one who has the answers to the questions of life. A Rough Diamond is a story about two sisters within a typical Nigerian family. It shows how life can unpredictably change for good or bad. It brought out the frailty of human affections in the face of adversity, Sharon's emotional battles with God who she held responsible for her woes and her emotional journey from sorrow to immeasurable joy and freedom. It answered certain life questions we ask when faced with a tragedy. Questions such as: Why me? Where were you Lord when it hurts the most? Why do bad things happen to good people? In this story, we will get to see that death is not the end of human existence, but only a door to eternity. Also, we will understand how a life can be beautifully remolded and transformed by tragedy; how good can spin out of a tragic event and how the human spirit through faith in God can rise above every conceivable challenge of life. Emotional, gripping and deeply moving, this is a book that will intrigue and remain with you forever.

Refining Expertise written by Gwen Ottinger and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-04 with Social Science categories.

"An intriguing and impressive account of corporate social responsibility—and neoliberalism writ large—on the ground, in action, in chemical plant communities in Louisiana…Ottinger effectively [illustrates] how, in complex, culturally saturated ways, corporate commitment to `responsible care’ has created critical challenges for environmental activism and justice." —Kim Fortun, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Residents of a small Louisiana town were sure that the oil refinery next door was making them sick. As part of a campaign demanding relocation away from the refinery, they collected scientific data to prove it. Their campaign ended with a settlement agreement that addressed many of their grievances—but not concerns about their health. Yet, instead of continuing to collect data, residents began to let refinery scientists’ assertions that their operations did not harm them stand without challenge. What makes a community move so suddenly from actively challenging to apparently accepting experts’ authority? Refining Expertise argues that the answer rests in the way that refinery scientists and engineers defined themselves as experts. Rather than claiming to be infallible, they began to portray themselves as responsible. This work drives home the need for both activists and politically engaged scholars to reconfigure their own activities in response, in order to advance community health and robust scientific knowledge about it. Gwen Ottinger is Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington-Bothell, where she teaches in the Science, Technology, & Society and Environmental Studies majors. She is co-editor of Technoscience and Environmental Justice: Expert Cultures in a Grassroots Movement.
