The select band of Sanskrit scholars will turn with curiosity to A Digit of the Moon: A Hindoo Love Story, which has been translated from the original MS. by Mr. F. W. Bain Mr. Bain stimulates interest at the beginning by the romantic account he gives in his preface of how Unoriginal was given to him by an old Maratha Brahman, dying of the plague, in token of gratitude for a service the translator had done him. "A Digit of the Moon" is poetical Sanskrit for a peculiarly beautiful woman, and the story, which is full of Oriental characteristics, circles round the story of how a misogynist king was brought to his senses at last, and the difficulties which beset the pursuit of his charmer. In his brief and useful notes Mr. Bain calls attention to occasional similarities to passages in the European classics and gives a half promise that, although this love story is complete as here translated, he may presently produce a version of other parts of his manuscript. He claims for the tale an unique position, and few readers could fail to be attracted by the simple fairy-tale-like charm so well rendered in Mr. Bain's excellent English version. -Literature, Issue 116 [1900]

Excerpt from A Digit of the Moon: And Other Love Stories From the Hindu Tartary, says the Abbe Huc - himself the most imaginative and inimitable of all wanderers - is peopled with pilgrim birds: "high up in air, you see them roam, in dense battalions, forming in their flight, with a kind of drill in its caprice, a thousand quaint designs, which melt away only to be formed anew." So also, that region of vast and melancholy plains, stretching and rising southward ever to the white wall of huge Himalaya, is the very home of lakes: "Koko Nurs"; blue lovely sheets of sapphire, scattered like fragments of a broken mirror to spot earth with the colour of the sky. And one of these, hidden away in the all but inaccessible snows just south of Kailas (where the Great God dwells) is the sacred Mountain Tarn, Manasa: and thereby hangs our tale, whose title is so idiomatic that it can be rendered into English only by a paraphrase, losing a little of its Indian aroma on the way. It says to us this: What the Swan is to the Lake, what the Moon is to the Sky, what Parwati (the Daughter of Himalaya) is to her Lord, that is woman to the world: the Haunter, the Indweller, the Ornament, the Fixed-Idea, the Mystic Solitary Swan in the heart of the dark blue lake of Time. Excerpt from A Digit of the Moon: A Hindoo Love Story, Translated From the Original Ms. The better to illustrate how, in Hindoo mythology, the ideas of a beautiful woman, the Moon, and the Sea, dissolve and disappear into one another, I have placed on the fly-leaf of this edition a single stanza, drawn from another part of my MS., which characteristically exemplifies that dissolving view: subjoining here, for the benefit of the uninitiated, a literal translation: O thou lovely Incarnation of the Nectar-dropping Moon, come down from Heaven to lighten our Darkness: Delight of the Race of Man: retaining in thy Womanhood the dancing Play of the Waves of that Sea of Milk out of which thou wert originally churned by the Gods: we the Three Worlds (i.e. of Childhood, Man-hood, and Age) do worship the Orb of thy Bosom that possesses for us a Threefold Mystical Feminine Energy: being a Pitcher of Milk for us, when we are Born: The last lines contain recondite philosophical allusions to the Creation, Preservation, and Destruction of the World, and other matters, in technical terms which defy translation. Life in Hindoo philosophy, as in that of the Middle Ages, carries about with it a perfume of death: there is in its atmosphere something melancholy, and even little morbid, like the slow tolling of a bell.
