Em meio a tantos estudos sobre diferentes temáticas do período da ditadura, a questão indígena permaneceu pouco explorada. A contribuição à historiografia do livro de Breno Tommasi é notável, não somente porque o autor se junta aos historiadores que vêm mudando essa realidade, mas, sobretudo, por suas abordagem e conclusões. A partir de rigorosa pesquisa e avesso a simplificações maniqueístas, Breno demonstra a complexidade das questões no interior do Serviço de Proteção aos Índios e da Fundação Nacional do Índio, durante os anos do governo do general Médici. Da mesma forma, os indigenistas, agentes desses órgãos estatais, mantiveram posicionamentos variados no que diz respeito a suas posições, ações e relações com o regime. Esses anos de grande repressão foram, igualmente, de enorme otimismo quanto ao desenvolvimento do país, experimentado por expressivos segmentos da sociedade. Os indigenistas do SPI e da FUNAI não estiveram alheios a tal realidade, compartilhando da promessa de Brasil grande, o projeto desenvolvimentista da ditadura, em particular, do período Médici, sem que isso implicasse diretamente a adesão ao regime. É com esse olhar sofisticado, que o historiador reconstrói a realidade passada, imune aos males das soluções fáceis. Para além da relevância e da abordagem dos temas de Entusiastas do desenvolvimento, é digno de nota a sua atualidade. Passado meio século, o país ainda se debate entre proteger e integrar os indígenas. Tal tensão é anterior à ditadura iniciada em 1964, foi desastrosa nos anos de regime militar e assim permaneceu após a redemocratização do Brasil. E, nessas primeiras décadas do século XXI, nada indica a resolução dessa equação, sequer a amenização das dores dessa contradição.
