O Box A Divina Comédia é uma viagem do próprio autor em direção a Deus. Dante Alighieri é, de forma milagrosa, capacitado a realizar uma jornada além das fronteiras terrenas, o que o leva a visitar as almas no Inferno, no Purgatório e no Paraíso. A Divina Comédia descreve, de forma épica, a jornada de três dias de Dante, tendo como ajudante Virgílio, a voz da razão e Beatriz, o símbolo da Palavra de Deus. É o retrato alegórico da vida humana até Deus. O longo poema épico é narrado em primeira pessoa, onde Dante é o narrador e, ainda, o personagem principal. Descreve a trajetória da alma de Dante e está dividido em três partes: Inferno: onde estão dos pecadores (Submundo). Exilado que era, Dante, o poeta, sentiu-se bastante perdido em sua vida. No início do Inferno, o personagem "Dante" também se perde física e espiritualmente. O antigo poeta romano Virgílio aparece no poema para o guiar através do Inferno em um esforço para salvar sua alma. O inferno existe no meio da Terra e é formado por nove círculos. Os pecadores do Inferno nunca se arrependeram enquanto estavam na Terra. Eles sofrem as consequências dos pecados que cometeram durante a vida, os quais se voltam contra eles. O Inferno é disposto como um cone de cabeça para baixo, com cada círculo descendente se tornando menor e contendo almas mais depravadas e sofrimento mais intenso. Fora de suas portas estão aqueles que não aceitaram nem rejeitaram a Deus. Dentro dos portões, o primeiro círculo contém os não batizados e os pagãos nascidos antes de Cristo. Os outros círculos são definidos pelo pecado maior cometido: luxúria (círculo dois), gula (círculo três), ganância (círculo quatro), e ira e depressão (círculo cinco). Os círculos finais compõem a cidade infernal chamada Dite ou Dis, com o círculo seis abrigando hereges, o círculo sete englobando os que cometeram violência, o círculo oito comportando enganadores e o círculo nove recebendo aqueles que traíram a confiança. Na região mais profunda do círculo nove, um Satanás de três faces, preso em um lago congelado, mastiga os piores traidores de todos os tempos: Judas – traiu Jesus; Brutus e Cassius – juntaram-se para trair o imperador Júlio César, que proferiu a famosa frase: "Até tu, Brutus?". Purgatório: onde estão os pecadores que aguardam julgamento (Local da purificação). Depois da terrível experiência enfrentada no Inferno, Dante e Virgílio entram no Purgatório, onde as almas penitentes sofrem punições para se purificarem completamente do pecado antes de entrar no Paraíso. O Purgatório tem a forma de uma montanha e está dividido em sete níveis diferentes, associados aos sete pecados capitais: orgulho, inveja, ira, preguiça, cobiça, gula e luxúria. Aqueles que lutaram com as chamas da luxúria na Terra suportam literalmente um fogo purgante no Purgatório. Mas, ao contrário das almas no Inferno, estas abraçam seu castigo porque ele as está tornando sagradas. Elas cantam e louvam a Deus no meio de seu castigo, e imploram a Dante que peça às pessoas da Terra que rezem por suas almas. Ao contrário das almas no inferno, elas são livres para se moverem entre os sete níveis à medida que se purificam. Além do sétimo nível, no topo da montanha, está o paraíso terrestre do Éden, onde Virgílio desaparece e é substituído pelo próximo guia de Dante. Paraíso: local das almas purificadas, o paraíso terrestre (A esfera mística). Virgílio, enquanto pagão, não podia entrar no céu, por isso foi substituído pelo próximo guia, Beatriz, que levou Dante do Purgatório ao Paraíso. Beatriz, uma bela mulher e símbolo da Palavra de Deus, foi o amor e a musa de Dante por grande parte de sua poesia; por essa razão é apropriado que ela atue como a guia de Dante para o Divino.
