Originally published in 1984 this book remains as relevant as when it was first published. At that time the oil crises of the 1970s and the growing international debt burden highlighted the extent to which events in primary commodity markets continue to influence the economies of developing and industrialized economies alike. Commodity modelling has become a valuable tool in efforts to predict and understand the behaviour of commodity markets and thereby reduce their fluctuations. This book provides an overview of the nature of the different types of commodity model as well as their diverse applications. In non-technical language the reader is introduced to the underlying modelling methodologies, including their advantages, limitations and commodity specific implications. The book will be of interest to commodity economists, traders and analysts, economic planners and those involved in agricultural, mineral and energy modelling.

The understand the short-run structure and price formation mechanism of the beef cattle economy is extremely important in Argentina. Large fluctuations characterized by a strong cyclical path which has been observed in the real price of beef cattle, constitute an important source of distrubance in the overall economy. This study focuses on the analysis of the industry's short-rum structure in an effort to understand its dynamic characteristics and to explain the observed price fluctuations. Special attention is given to the evaluation of specific policies such as exchange rate policy, rationing, maximum retail prices and credit policy which had been implemented during the last decade. The economic model is based on a theory of investment behavior of producers and on traditional demand theory. Four statistical models were specified and estimated. These differ in (a) the level of aggregation of slaughter supply equations, (b) whether or noto average slaugter weights are regarded as variables or assumed to be constant at mean sample values, and (c) whether or noto domestic demand and demand for export are specified at the farm level or at the final retail and FOB levels when the behavior of intermediaries and of export packers is explicitly taken into consideration. The interdependency among the large components of the beef cattle economy are analyzed on the basis of the most aggregated model. All four ...

Excerpt from Argentina's Livestock and Meat Industry Many ranchers vaccinate against the more common diseases, but it is a frequent compla that the vaccines available are not reliable. The government is now helping the veterinar industry to develop standards for foot-and-mouth disease vaccines. In the northern tick zom dipping is commonly practiced. One of Argentina's most hopeful government projects is the control of foot-and-mm disease. The disease is being combatted by quarantining infected areas and bringing these unc control by vaccination of all livestock within these areas. Argentina's cattle and beef industry is based on the productive pastures of the Pam Steers and heifers are put on special fattening pastures soon after weaning and kept there about 12 months until ready for market. Alfalfa pastures are the foundation of this syste although many animals are pastured on rye or other small grains during the winter. Fatten in feed lots, common in the United States, is not practiced. Except for purebred breeding anime Argentine cattle are not fed any grain except when occasionally turned into grain fields ti have failed to produce a crop worth harvesting.
