Temos a alegria de comemorar noventa anos de inauguração da estátua do Cristo Redentor, trazendo para você, querido leitor, este livro, intitulado O Cristo Redentor Universal, para contemplar o monumento a partir da mensagem simbólica que ele nos sugere. Concebido originalmente no século XIX, o propósito da ereção da estátua do Cristo Redentor era comunicar a mensagem cristã numa linguagem universal, sem fugir dos aspectos essenciais. Após a sua inauguração, em outubro de 1931, o monumento transcendeu o âmbito religioso, representando também a cultura brasileira para o mundo. Em outubro de 2006, o platô do monte Corcovado foi reconhecido como santuário católico, um lugar de oração e de encontro, em que as pessoas podem buscar a paz com Deus, com a natureza e com o próximo. A estátua do Cristo Redentor possui, em sua história, em seu simbolismo e em sua localização, elementos que ainda não tinham sido abordados pela teologia em caráter sistemático.
