A Revolução de 1930, mais do que selar o fim de uma velha República oligárquica e inaugurar um novo Brasil moderno e industrial, como dizia o próprio regime de Vargas e seus intelectuais, representou o auge de uma crise advinda de princípios da década de 1920, de um modelo político e econômico respectivamente marcado pela chamada Política dos Governadores e pela exportação cafeicultora. Além disso, marcou o início de fortes disputas entre setores mais ou menos modernos e tradicionais da sociedade brasileira, culminando na imposição ao país, a 10 de novembro de 1937, de um novo modelo político-econômico de tipo autoritário e corporativo. Para além dos anos Vargas, contudo, questões como a centralidade do Estado, a proeminência do Executivo e alguns princípios de sua legislação social se manteriam até muito recentemente no país.

Latin American Dictatorships in the Era of Fascism focuses on the reverse-wave of dictatorships that emerged in Latin America during the 1930s and the transnational dissemination of authoritarian institutions in the era of fascism. António Costa Pinto revisits the study of authoritarian alternatives to liberal democracy in 1930s Latin America from the perspective of the diffusion of corporatism in the world of inter-war dictatorships. The book explores what drove the horizontal spread of corporatism in Latin America, the processes and direction of transnational diffusion, and how social and political corporatism became a central set of new institutions utilized by dictatorships during this era. Indigenous Struggle at the Heart of Brazil examines the dynamic interplay between the Brazilian government and the Xavante Indians of central Brazil in the context of twentieth-century western frontier expansion and the state’s indigenous policy. Offering a window onto Brazilian developmental policy in Amazonia and the subsequent process of indigenous political mobilization, Seth Garfield bridges historical and anthropological approaches to reconsider state formation and ethnic identity in twentieth-century Brazil. Garfield explains how state officials, eager to promote capital accumulation, social harmony, and national security on the western front, sought to delimit indigenous reserves and assimilate native peoples. Yet he also shows that state efforts to celebrate Indians as primordial Brazilians and nationalist icons simultaneously served to underscore and redefine ethnic difference. Garfield explores how various other social actors—elites, missionaries, military officials, intellectuals, international critics, and the Indians themselves—strove to remold this multifaceted project. Paying particular attention to the Xavante’s methods of engaging state power after experience with exile, territorial loss, and violence in the “white” world, Garfield describes how they emerged under military rule not as the patriotic Brazilians heralded by state propagandists but as a highly politicized ethnic group clamoring for its constitutional land rights and social entitlements.
