Ezra Pound and Roman Poetry is an examination of a crucial phase in the development of Pound as translator and, therefore, of creative translation in the twentieth century. The book provides a survey of Pound's attempt to appropriate the poetry of Classical Rome, by tracing the histories of the poet's involvement with Horace, Virgil, Catullus, Ovid and Propertius, in order to express his own marginal position within London during the First World War. No extensive critical discussion is attempted, but attention is given to Pound's critical writings on the Latin poets as well as his translations from their work. Dr Davidson also treats other aspects of Pound's problematic relation to the Classical Tradition: the use and abuse of dictionaries; Laforgue and Baudelaire as a third term haunting Pound's translations; the difficult monolith of English classicism; the invention of an oppositional romanitas. It is hoped that this work may encourage others to produce the comprehensive survey which Pound's sustained and Protean relationship to the classical languages would appear to demand. Pound's readings of Latin poetry are inevitably readings also of English poetry, in the context of England, and particularly London, in the first two decades of the twentieth century.

Excerpt from Translations of English Poetry Into Latin Verse: Designed as Part of a New Method of Instructing in Latin If any teacher use these pieces as 1 design them, he will make the English an exercise of Eloention then it will be gradually impressed on the memory with little effort. Yet learning by heart ought to be cultivated, and has in my opinion been unwisely given up or lessened since I was a schoolboy. The knowledge of the English pieces will aid to econo mise the use of the dictionary. And will give a true idea of the sense of the Latin. If the pupil be allowed to take improper advantage, it will be entirely the teacher's fault, who ought to catechise him on the exact meaning of the Latin words, as well as on the structure. Excerpt from Verse Translations From Greek and Latin Poets: Chiefly of Passages Chosen for Translation at Sight The verses' in this volume were originally written for the most part as 'fair copies' for schoolmasters who wished to help their pupils to realise that poetry may lurk concealed be hind difficulties of grammar and vocabulary. I venture to hope that, as they have been found useful for that specific purpose, they may also prove of some interest to scholars in general. Both the text and the rendering of passages here and there are doubtful. In such cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
