Dende hai case dous séculos Irlanda foi constituída polo galeguismo como un dos principais referentes simbólicos de Galicia. Fose como cotexo da miseria propia, como evidencia xustificativa da proclamada natureza céltica do país, como estímulo para a mobilización do campesiñado ou como paradigma da loita nacional, Irlanda acabou por se converter no discurso galeguista en modelo de inspiración para seguir Galicia. O emparellamento deliñou unha representación dos dous suxeitos como nacións irmás desde as mesmas orixes, semellantes nos trazos caracterizadores e no seu destino histórico. A xénese ideolóxico-política da comparanza asignáballe unha función confirmadora da lexitimidade e a pertinencia das propostas galeguistas, o que volvía o retrato irlandés dependente dos cambios contextuais. De tal xeito que, preservando os fundamentos que autorizaban a relación de afinidade, a figura galega de Irlanda experimentou unha serie de adaptacións no decurso do tempo, amosando a súa natureza conxuntural e maleable á comenencia. Neste senso, foron as necesidades do designio galeguista en cada circunstancia as determinantes primordiais da imaxe de Irlanda construída desde Galicia, val dicir, da selección, subliñado e esvaemento dos riscos do seu perfil.

The chapters included in this volume examine a number of modern and contemporary travel and mobility narratives produced in the different languages of Iberia, whether they offer accounts of Iberia itself or portray other geographical or human contexts. Illustrating the diversity of forms characteristic of travel writing, the texts discussed in the book feature representations of travel and mobility as presented in novels, films and other literary and cultural manifestations such as comics, plays and journalistic chronicles. Additionally, the volume incorporates a section of creative responses to the tropes of travel and mobility by contemporary Iberian authors in English translation. Thus, the book provides critical accounts of and creative insights into a tradition that has produced canonical texts, but also unorthodox, complex and challenging narratives, particularly in more recent times.
