In this classic work of intellectual history, Ernst Cassirer provides both a cogent synthesis and a penetrating analysis of one of history's greatest intellectual epochs: the Enlightenment. A liberdade no Ocidente muitas vezes é abordada apenas sob o seu aspecto social e político, mas a fé nas suas diversas expressões, o interesse transcendente, o elemento religioso que cala fundo na alma humana, quase sempre tiveram papel central nesse tão importante debate. Caso as várias doutrinas e instituições religiosas não tivessem feito parte da nossa história, muito daquilo que pensamos e decidimos talvez nem teria sido cogitado. Algumas das grandes oposições do imaginário moderno derivam dessa ascendência da religião sobre a cultura. Ortodoxia e heresia, ciência e religião, razão e fé, catolicismo e protestantismo, conformidade e dissidência, filosofia e teologia, fundamentalismo e secularização, dentre outras tantas tensões dialéticas, ajudaram a traçar as linhas de fronteira, bem como os debates, as definições e as tomadas de posições necessárias para a convivência, harmoniosa ou não, no mundo moderno. Filósofos – religiosos, sem religião ou antirreligiosos – frequentemente contribuíram para o debate sobre a natureza da fé, os limites do saber teológico e o lugar da religião na sociedade. Não poucas vezes, elucubrações metafísicas, investigações éticas e teorias políticas impactaram, seja a percepção pública, sejam as próprias posições das igrejas a respeito de temas doutrinais. Teólogos ou líderes espirituais propiciaram transformações da consciência coletiva, ora atuando sobre a doutrina, ora sobre a experiência de fé da população em geral. Embora a Reforma e o Iluminismo tenham posição de destaque nas histórias da filosofia ou da religião, nem sempre ficaram evidentes as conexões entre ambos e o debate fundamental sobre a natureza (metafísica) e sobre o lugar (ético e civil) da religião na vida dos indivíduos. É esta a lacuna que o presente estudo se propõe a preencher.
