The purpose of this thesis is to make a financial performance analysis of Mistui OSK Lines, in order to establish whether the financial performance of the company has a positive and stable growth during fiscal 2005-2011. It also aims to identify which factors have been affecting the profitability and the companys strategies to cope with such factors. The strategy used within this thesis has been conducted by the archival research, which make use of administrative records and documents as the primary source of data. Also, since this thesis bases its findings mainly on numeric data, a more quantitative approach will be implemented. However, the natural choice of researching approaches is to conduct a mixed method, which basically means that both the quantitative and qualitative approaches are being applied. We have used the company's annual reports from 2006-2012 as our primary data, and then performed the financial analysis using ratio analysis and trend analysis to produce numerical data and graphs describing trends in the company's financial performance over the period. We have also compared its results with the results of two Japanese shipping companies namely NYK Lines and K lines in order to determine the companys relative position of financial soundness. We have chosen these comparative companies carefully to ensure healthier comparison of different companies. Furthermore, the quantitative comparison is supported by our qualitative comments about the trends, factors and strategies which influenced companys performance and other information borrowed from the respective annual reports. The findings of this thesis present that the companys financial performance has not been sustainable and that its growth has been fluctuating. Throughout fiscal 2005-2007, the companys financial performance had improved significantly and reached its peak in fiscal 2007. Consequently, the company had been able to finance a large portion of its capital investments with operating cash flow, and, therefore, reduce its debt portion in its capital structure as well as provide a higher return on its equity and assets. However, when the financial crisis exploded in 2008, the companys net profit margin had worsened ever since. It indicates that the company did not provide adequate cash flows to cover its working capital and capital expenditures. This will lead to the poor return on its capital employed and force it to raise external funds to settle all the expenses. The companys performance has been vulnerable to the world economy, freight rates, climate and a natural disaster factor and fluctuation in freight rates, foreign exchange rates, bunker prices and interest rates. The company has been implementing several strategies in order to improve its performance namely: diversified and well balance portfolio management, capacity management, slow steaming, vessel sharing agreements, implementing hedging instrument and reducing administrative costs.
