Excerpt from A First French Book This First French Book is not intended to fill the place of a reference grammar of the French language. The aim in its preparation has been to offer a work so thorough, however, as to lay an adequate foundation for further study. The chief idea of the author has been to lead the learner to conscious knowledge, to develop his faculty of deriving principles for himself. The habit of seeking out and ex plaining differences, and noting resemblances, between the foreign and the native idiom is of the utmost value, not only in training the judgment, but also in practically ao quiring the language. Throughout this book these differ ences, in particular, are constantly dwelt upon, and va rions devices are employed to call attention to them in a striking manner. For this reason examples precede in every case the formulation of a rule. The learner, moreover, is constantly put on his guard against the stereotyped errors to which speakers of English are prone when attempting to express themselves in French. This comparative method is applied in all parts of'the book, as well in the treatment of pronunciation as in inflection and syntax. The French exercises consist usually of groups of sen'= tenoes offering connected sense. The pupil is encouraged from the outset to learn to infer the meanings of words from the context, and to look them up rather as a confirmation or correction of, than as a substitution for, his own ingenu ity. Excerpt from Newson's First French Book In order that the object may not be first associated with an English word and then translated into its French equivalent, the child is helped to connect the object immediately with the foreign word by means oi pictures. The pictures are also of the greatest possible assistance in securing uniformity oi concep tion and oi association in connection with the words used. The four pictures at the end of this book are reduced copies of the wall maps (55x35 inches) pub lished by Holzel. The American publishers invite correspondence in regard to these maps. The small reproductions are intended for the use of tbe pupil in his private study at school or at home. The large maps are the results of much study and cover a wide range Of natural scenery and human activity. They will be found a valuable adjunct to other depart mente of school work as well as that of modern languages. The Committee of Twelve appointed by the National Educational Association to investigate and report upon the subject of French and German in struction in secondary schools, made the following recommendations: For a course of six years, begino ning, say, at the age of twelve, a combination during tbe first three years of tbe psychological' and phonetic' methods, accompanied by some study oi grammar. The same committee describes the psy chological method as resting on the principle oi the association of ideas and the habit of 'mental visualization.' Enough has been said to show the use of association in this series. The superiority oi pictures to visualized objecte, or a scene created before the pupil's mind, has been demonstrated to the satisfaction oi most teachers, as far as young chil dren are concerned. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. In writing it, the author has aimed to ally two contending systems of teaching languages, one of which is known as the Natural or Conversational Method, the other as the Translation Method, with the regular teaching of grammar. It may be used as follows: - The first ten lessons are object lessons, the vocabularies of which contain only names of objects found under the eyes of children, in any schoolroom, or easily at hand. These vocabularies are generally divided into several parts, each of which contains words or model sentences, and corresponds to one of the exercises that follow. The teacher, taking each part of the vocabulary separately, and making or asking the children to make suitable movements, first speaks alone, then makes the children repeat, and writes on the blackboard what has just been said.
