Students who are to give five years or more to preparatory Latin would normally devote a year each to the Primer and the Reader; but the maturer pupils in the four-year course will cover easily in their first year the work outlined in both books. It is hoped too, that, aside from use in this regular sequence, the Reader will be found to meet the needs of many teachers who are looking for a carefully graded text for supplementary reading or for translation at sight. Excerpt from New First Latin Reader The prescription of work for Examination in Latin for Pass Matriculation for the years 1907, 1908, 1909, and for Junior Teachers' Certificates for the year 1907, and presumably for the years 1908-1909, is denned by the Calendar of 1906-1907 of the University of Toronto as follows: - Translation at sight of passages of average difficulty from Caesar, upon which special stress will be laid. Translation from a prescribed portion of Vergil's Aeneid, with questions thereon. Questions on Latin accidence. Translation into Latin of English sentences to illustrate the common rules of Latin syntax, upon which special stress will be laid. The vocabulary will be taken from the prescribed portion of Caesar. Examination upon a short prescribed portion of Caesar, to test the candidate's knowledge of Latin syntax and his power of idiomatic translation, etc. The following are the texts prescribed: - Caesar, Bellum Gallicum, Book IV., chaps. 20-38, and Book V., chaps. 1-23; Vergil, Aeneid, Book II., vv. 1-505. Two papers will be set: (1) Translation at sight, Vergil and accidence. (2) Translation into Latin, syntax, and idiomatic translation from prescribed Caesar, etc. An examination of the present book will show that these requirements have been kept steadily in view. This book contains: - (1) Full introduction to the reading of Caesar. (2) d104 of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum prescribed, with vocabulary of the more difficult and unusual words at the bottom of each page. Excerpt from Latin Reader: Nature Study and Easy Stories for Sight Reading During the First Year in Latin During the first year pupils must form the habit of reading Latin. If we had the material, they might learn to read Latin as they learned to read English, by reading. What can be done to get this material? Of what should this material consist? We are preparing them to read authors. Our own experience has often shown us that the first few pages of a new book seem difficult usually the most difficult of the whole book and so much so that we might say of many books: Well begun is half done. The majority of pupils who read much Latin, read Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil. Their first attack upon each of these authors is nearly always made upon the first pages of the Gallic War, Book I or Book II, the First Oration against Catiline, and the First Book of the Eneid. Their reading during the first year can be made to contain every important word and every form and construction occurring in those few pages. During the first year's work, students of Latin are obliged to read hun dreds and even thousands of sentences illustrating Latin forms and syntax. Those sentences are for the most part fragments of the sentences of Caesar and other Latin authors and are usually arranged so as to illustrate and review the use of certain constructions with regularity and precision.
