A modified narrative research model was utilized to explore how first responders experience humor as a coping mechanism. Thirteen participants from law enforcement, fire, and EMS services were interviewed. Interviews were then analyzed thematically and structurally. The themes identified were: appropriate audience for humor, recognition of dark humor, influences of humor, establishing trust and camaraderie through humor, and non-humor based coping mechanisms. Portions of the interviews were presented structurally in order to illustrate how the information was portrayed linguistically to the researcher. Themes are discussed in relation to current literature on first responder coping mechanisms. The results provide the essence and perspective of the participants’ use of humor as coping. Clinical and social implications are discussed, along with identified limitations and future research considerations.
