Excerpt from A Forestry Program for Women's Organizations And this is not one of the causes in which women, however they may long to act, find themselves helpless to do so. Many opportunities lie Open to women's organizations for practical activity in the forestry cause. The first essential of systematic work for forest conservation is that each forested State have a State forestry department. In the few forested States that have not yet established such departments the women's organization has a clean-cut job ready to its hand. In many of the States forestry depart ments have been created, but are crippled by the meagerness of their appropriations. Additional funds may be needed to improve the State's system of fire prevention and control or to support the intensely practical project of sending out foresters to teach farmers and other private landowners how to de velop: and care for woodlands; or they may go into the purchase of State forests. The creation or en largement of State or municipal forests is an activity in which a number of women's organizations have chosen to go on their own responsibility, purchasing forest land as a useful and perpetual gift to the State or the community. Land for this purpose can usually be bought very cheaply, since forests will grow on land totally unsuitable for farm purposes; and thus with only a small outlay it is possible to establish a public resource of value and an object of civic pride which incidentally stimulates the interest of the public in forestry. Women's clubs have sometimes found an additional incentive in the opportunity to purchase a tract of special historical interest or an especially beautiful forest area which otherwise might have been disfigured by destructive lumbering. Despite the importance of forests for global processes and the tradition of forest management by local Amazonian peoples, there is not much available literature on gender and forests in the Amazon region. Yet gender roles and relationships are important components of key emerging forest-related issues, such as climate change and the differential risks and opportunities faced by women and men in different contexts. This paper reviews recent literature (in English, Spanish and Portuguese) that addresses gender and forests in Amazonia, focusing on: property rights in Amazonian territories and communities; diverse and changing gender relations; forest management programs; and women’s participation in social movements and organizations. The review finds significant historical, sociocultural and material barriers to gender equity and to women’s full participation in sustainable management of Amazonian forests, and a relative lack of focus on gender in forest management programs, despite promising examples. The most important finding was that, over the past two decades, women from different Amazonian social groups have become increasingly organized, enhancing their rights, levels of participation and empowerment. More research is needed to understand the variability of gender relations and rights in different Amazonian contexts, and how they are changing. Research is also needed to understand and support efforts to improve gender equity in rights to resources and income and participation in key community and societal decisions on the future of Amazonian forests and their peoples.

Both women and men depend on forests, agroforestry and trees for their livelihoods, and play a critical role in managing them. However, inequalities persist in roles, rights and responsibilities of women and men, and shape the ways they participate in decision making, benefit from forest and tree resources, and experience changes in forest and tree-based landscapes. Gender biases in the wider policy environment and exclusionary social norms result in a gender gap in access to and control of assets and key resources, including land, labor, credit, information and extension services, with women facing disadvantages in several domains. These inequalities, embedded in formal and informal institutions and structures, hinder the change needed to support the sustainable and equitable development solutions that FTA seeks to deliver. As FTA's research agenda has evolved since the program's inception, so too has the program's portfolio of gender and social inclusion research. This revised research agenda and action plan draws on a tradition of quality gender work within FTA centers and complements FTA's original Gender Strategy (2013). It reflects the evolution of the program, including thematic and methodological developments in gender research and praxis, and increases the focus on the nexus of gender and generation (including youth issues), and efforts to make FTA’s research increasingly transformative.

How do we integrate gender analysis into forestry research? Where do we start? What challenges are we going to face? What skills are required to conduct gender analysis? What methods are appropriate? What do we do with the data we collect? The answers to these questions often feel elusive. However many of them are within our reach. If you are a CIFOR scientist, partner or other researchers curious about what it means to conduct gender-responsive forestry research this guide is for you. This guide for was developed to help CIFOR scientists, partners, and program administrators more easily develop their own skills in gender analysis or find the needed resources elsewhere to advance efforts to integrate gender issue into forestry research. The guide provides researchers, ranging from those with no knowledge of gender concepts to those with some familiarity with the topic, with an introduction to the concept of gender and the gender dimensions of key forestry issues. Short thematic briefs outline the key dimensions of various topics including climate change, REDD+, and value chains.
