"In this urgent response to the challenges of our day - Somalia, Bosnia, and beyond - an international team of experts addresses the responsibilities of providing assistance to civilian populations caught up in conflicts and disasters." "The human consequences of famine and disease, ethnic conflicts, and military aggression are all too visible to concerned citizens everywhere. How can human rights be protected in times of disaster? What is the role of international relief organizations? How can political diplomacy and health initiatives be brought together to ensure survival in a conflict-ridden world? This hard-hitting book, authored by renowned figures in medicine, political affairs, and humanitarian assistance, covers a wide range of crucial issues, from the plight of refugees to the economics of neglect. It eloquently demonstrates how global cooperation on health-related problems can open doors to political negotiation."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Quantitative social scientists use survival analysis to understand the forces that determine the duration of events. This Element provides a guideline to new techniques and models in survival analysis, particularly in three areas: non-proportional covariate effects, competing risks, and multi-state models. It also revisits models for repeated events. The Element promotes multi-state models as a unified framework for survival analysis and highlights the role of general transition probabilities as key quantities of interest that complement traditional hazard analysis. These quantities focus on the long term probabilities that units will occupy particular states conditional on their current state, and they are central in the design and implementation of policy interventions.

Survival Analysis With Long Term Survivors written by Ross A. Maller and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Mathematics categories.

The aim of this book is to suggest and exemplify a systematic methodology for analysing survival data which contains "immune", or "cured" individuals, denoted generically as "long-term survivors". Such data occurs in medical and epidemiological applications, where the intention may be to identify whether or not cured or immune individuals are present in a population, perhaps as a result of treatments given; in the analysis of recidivism data in criminology, where the intentions are similar with respect to prisoners released from and possibly returning to prison; and in many other areas where followup data is available on individuals, with the possibility that not all suffer the event under investigation. Both nonparametric and parametric methods are proposed and developed. The effects of covariate information can be assessed via a kind of generalised linear framework in the parametric analyses. The proposed methodologies are supported by asymptotic analyses and simulations of real situations. While these theoretical underpinnings are presented in reasonable rigour and detail, the book is aimed very much at the practitioner who wishes to analyse survival data with (or even without) immunes.

As medicines continue to evolve, as well as our tendency to misuse and abuse them, viruses become more and more resilient. While the flu is largely an inconvenience which at its worst may result in a missed day of work, it bears the risk of returning to the days of old when it was a terminal disease. With the imminent risk of resistant super viruses emerging, New York City has taken precautions to prepare for the worst case scenario. If deemed necessary New York has plans to completely quarantine and isolate the city from the world. This provides us with the perfect opportunity to ask the question Hollywood has become fascinated with& How would a city like New York function and survive in the Apocalypse? The answer is not as simple as waiting out the storm; with limited resources, no access to the outside world and a crippled infrastructure. What this thesis also aims to experiment with is the notion of not only barely surviving, but the creation of a new way of life; a truly self-sufficient city, perhaps even creating a Utopian society. This can be analyzed with a systems based approach regarding the different scales of life; from the survival of the individual, the function of the physical shells remaining, and finally the development of a Dynamic City composed new communities.

Survival And Event History Analysis written by Odd Aalen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-16 with Mathematics categories.

The aim of this book is to bridge the gap between standard textbook models and a range of models where the dynamic structure of the data manifests itself fully. The common denominator of such models is stochastic processes. The authors show how counting processes, martingales, and stochastic integrals fit very nicely with censored data. Beginning with standard analyses such as Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox regression, the presentation progresses to the additive hazard model and recurrent event data. Stochastic processes are also used as natural models for individual frailty; they allow sensible interpretations of a number of surprising artifacts seen in population data. The stochastic process framework is naturally connected to causality. The authors show how dynamic path analyses can incorporate many modern causality ideas in a framework that takes the time aspect seriously. To make the material accessible to the reader, a large number of practical examples, mainly from medicine, are developed in detail. Stochastic processes are introduced in an intuitive and non-technical manner. The book is aimed at investigators who use event history methods and want a better understanding of the statistical concepts. It is suitable as a textbook for graduate courses in statistics and biostatistics.

This book provides an extensive coverage of the methodology of survival analysis, ranging from introductory level material to deeper more advanced topics. The framework is that of proportional and non-proportional hazards models; a structure that is broad enough to enable the recovery of a large number of established results as well as to open the way to many new developments. The emphasis is on concepts and guiding principles, logical and graphical. Formal proofs of theorems, propositions and lemmas are gathered together at the end of each chapter separate from the main presentation. The intended audience includes academic statisticians, biostatisticians, epidemiologists and also researchers in these fields whose focus may be more on the applications than on the theory. The text could provide the basis for a two semester course on survival analysis and, with this goal in mind, each chapter includes a section with a range of exercises as a teaching aid for instructors.
